    Upper tailgate latch

I was wondering about the latch on my tailgate and if it needs adjusting. When I use the fob to unlock it, it looks like it is supposed to open it but on mine it does not quite manage it and it is in that half latched mode, not open not closed.

It does not close so easily either and requires what seems to be too much of a firm hand.

    Is my situation atypical?

I do not have 'open my rear hatch' activated on my key fob (I have headlights on) so cannot tell about unlocking.

However when closing it I find that if it is slammed it bounces off the latch and is not locked - likewise if you do not use enough force it does not latch - there is a sweet spot that works everytime so will lock with firm but not overly firm force on closing.

OOps just realised you are talking D4 where I am talking RRS.

I've found the same as Gary - too firm and it doesn't close and too soft - ditto ... you have to get it "just right" - maybe another LR quirk ?
When I first got my D3 the horn would often sound when locking to indicate that something wasn't right ... it was always the upper tailgate !!! - I soon learned the correct amount of pressure to apply to it when closing.
    cheers

Mine's the same as yours James. I hate the way my number plate rattles when the tail gate is closed too - one of those things i never get to sorting out.
    Cheers,

I had that rattle with my wife's Merc ML. I solved it by sticking some of that sticky backed foam on a roll that you get from Bunnings under the plate. No more rattle!

When I asked this question when my D4 was new (2010) (see here)the general reply from this forum was that this is the expected behaviour. I had also asked for this to be adjusted at the time of first service, and they couldn't do so, then showed me on several D4's in the workshop this this was the common behaviour.

I had the same problem on mine, took it in for its service and mentioned it to the dealer and they replaced the latch.
They said it was a common problem the latch apparently "de-laminates" (their words) it was replaced under warranty.
