    160k service with timing belt and cover change

    Hi Together,

    Just go a price from Davis Performance to do the 160k service on my HSE this also includes the timing belt.

    He mentioned that he would never do just the timing belt but also said the cover needs to be replaced as from 2008 one LR made a re-enforced stronger cover and he lost a engine after doing a TB change without cover change.

    He quotes 2k for the timing belt change including cover, does that sound right?

    I may be out of school her but is does seem exy, a friends territory just cost him 1200 for the 160k..

    Is it the 2.7d? Take it to a ford dealer and ask them to pretend it is a territory diesel and to ignore the badge.. That is if you would trust your LR with a ford dealer.

    Bruce said it would be $1400 without the cover change but he would not do it without as old cover ( per 2008) is to weak.

    Peter Davies also quoted $1400 but without timing belt cover change

    Just wondering whether cover is necessary

    Had been collecting the parts to do this myself when I heard about this problem. Front and rear belt + rollers was around the $500 mark and the cover that your mech is talking about is in fact the oil pump casing p/n LR013487. He's quite right too - a small percentage of pre 09MY models seem to have a problem where the timing belt tensioner mounting can shear off - the casting around it is quite thin. That's generally very bad news for the rest of the engine. Worse than that is the fact that valves, pistons, rings, bearings are not even available to do a rebuild (which is plain ridiculous) which means it's a new long motor for you - $10K+. This makes *not* changing the oil pump (at $250 parts) a bit of a Russian roulette game. The worst affected are 07-08MY.

    I have all the appropriate tools so will still be doing the work myself; it's too bad though that the original oil pump was manufactured with what is so obviously a badly designed tensioner mounting.

    The Terri obviously doesn't have this problem, as it was sorted long before the TDCi was ever introduced.

    I saw this thread the other day and thought hmmmmm

    When my MY08 TDV6 D3 was coming off lease it was close to 150k Kms and I asked the dealer if it required timing belts to be changed at any stage. I wanted the lease company to pay for that work if it was needed obviously.

    Was told the TDV6 does not have a time belt, really says I? I in fact asked that question several times over the course of a week and was told each time no timing belt.

    Obviously the bloody thing does have one and I am now nearing the magic 160k KM mark.

    Rang MR auto at Redcliffe about and my suspension fault. May be able to get suspension / compressor fault fixed under extended warranty with a little luck however the timing belt has to be done.
    He laughed when I told him what the local dealer had told me.

    Anyway he quoted $1100. I asked him if I needed the new cover as well. He said it is not required . . . .

    Will get it serviced at same time.

    Not required but for $300 extra and the cost of 10k if it should be required I'd not take the risk.

    Remember the car also did not have a timing belt.

    Davies Performance did the change without cover and ended up paying heavily for a new engine.

    I definitely get the cover changed as well next week small price for the consequences it could have.

    From what I have read there is an extra 2 hrs labour involved to remove the starter and lock all the gears /cogs as the oil pump cover removal can move the timing if this is not done.

    If only doing the belt it can be done without starter removal and the locking of the gears is not neccesary.

    For piece of mind when mine is due it will get a new cover as well.

    Once its done you forget it for the next 160,000ks. If not, everytime you read or hear about a failure you will wonder if your next.

    I hear you! I do tend to agree and will discuss it further with MR Auto when I book it in. Risk mitigation is my speciality!

    Specifically what am I asking them to replace so I don't sound like a goose?

    The oil pump. Part no. is LR013487 for the updated unit. Cost for me was $240 for the part.
