    MAF and westgate questions

    Hi Everyone,

Ive been having performance, along with other, issues with a defender td5 i recently brought. Basically i put my foot to the floor and it starts of very slowly then suddenly it goes however it looses all power with a slight incline.
I've read allot of posts stating that cleaning the MAP, MAF and checking the wastegate can help performance. Ive cleaned the MAP, which was full of gunk, and improved the responsiveness ever so slightly. Ive taken the MAF sensor out and had a look however being mechanically challenged im not how to tell if it's dirty or not? Should the conductive elements be black?

Also i have managed to move the westgate backwards and forward but it took a very large amount of force with both arms. Just wondering if this is normal or if i should be able to do it relatively easily?

    Thanks again,
    James

yes very hard to move waste gate, thats normal,
the MAF elements should be shiny silver,

how many k's has the truck done, the MAF has probably never been touched,

unplug it and see if it makes any change. Grab some MAF cleaner (autobarn) and give it a shot, dont physically touch it with anything, just the spray.

(do it cold too before you start the car for the day).

Thanks for the advise, ill stop off at autobarn and give that a try tomorrow night along with testing it without the MAF connected after work.
    The car has done 187,000km.
Given the amount of work that had to be carried out to get it roadworthy, along with simple thinks like brake lights, i doubt the MAF has been changed. That and i can still see red dust in it from when it was owned in WA 2 years ago.

Sorry to ask so many questions, I've done anything with a car engine until now and I'm just trying the simple things i can do myself to see if i can get the performance back up before spending more money at a mechanics

    Thanks again,
    James

    .

That is exactly how my MAF behaved when it was stuffed. The slightest hill and you would have to go down through the gears. Cleaned it with proper MAF cleaner and it got worse. Luckily I had a Nancom to confirm it was stuffed. Replaced it with a genuine MAF and it was transformed.

    Thanks again everyone.

I managed to lock myself out of the house while having look at the car
But what i did do was clean the MAF out and it did absolutely nothing.
I then tested with the MAF unplugged and it made a heck of a difference
I have a new MAF on the way an i look forward to seeing how much of a difference that makes.

I did scare the crap out of my self as there was white smoke coming from wastegate area... i then remembered that's where i had sprayed a large amount of WD40.. well i hope that's what caused it anyways :S

Thanks again for all the help
