    2.2TDCi engine "note"

My 2010 2.4 110 is due for replacement, and I was all but signed up on a 2.2 110, until I drove it, and I'm really struggling to get past the note of the engine.

So my question to the 2.2 owners is, does the engine settle in and the noise become less invasive, or have you got used to it?

Don't get me wrong, I liked the performance of the 2.2, I felt it was better off the line, and is a rev happy little engine, but I missed the (comparatively) silky sound of my 2.4 when I drove it.

    Cheers,

    Tim

I found the same thing, but it was the induction noise coming from the intake on the drivers side. A snorkel has lowered the sound a lot.

2.2 TDs make noise? they are nice and quiet..... compared to my 1980 S3 with a holden 186....

Comparing to my Ranger, they are a little noisy but I didn't think it was bad.

You mention that the 2.2 is better than the 2.4 off the line! WOW! (havn't driven a 2.4) I thought that the 2.2 was hopeless of the line.... and only got better when you got to 2nd gear. maybe it's just me.

From what I can gather the fuel economy isn't as good. I have not been impressed with the fuel economy in my 2.2 D90. I usually get around 12 - 13 litres per 100 km and that is not driving hard. If pushed on the highway it can be as bad a s 15.

I just went from a 2.4 to a 2.2, and I can say the 2.2 is deathly silent compared to the rough as guts noisey POC 2.4. The difference is night and day. Must have been something wrong with your 2.2.

They must be more "individual" than anyone gave them credit.

Just last week my 2.4 was idling next to a Td5 and everybody commented on how quiet the Puma was and the 2.2 a couple cars down was a lot quieter than my 2.4...

On the fuel consumption issue, my 2.4 gets 10 liters/100km like clockwork. I'm literary decimal points off on every fill (conditional to not having used low range on the tank!). It my daily drive with 50% traffic, 40% at 90km/h and 10% at 100km/h.

IMO it is all down to how you drive them. My mate's got a Puma just one year older than mine, and we have completely different driving styles. He never gets better than 15 liters/100km!

Based on my own trials (nothing better to do on trips between Perth and Karratha!) every km/h over 105km/h adds about 0.2 to your average consumption. Therefore a car that get around 10 liters/100km @ a steady 105km/h will drop to around 13 liters/100km @ 120km/h! A lot of money for very little time gained.

"Getting off the line" certainly won't help your average either, but they do take around 10,000km to loosen up and lose the slightly constipated grunt to get going...

The 2.2 is just more refined and I can't imagine the fuel consumption fluctuating that much to the 2.4 under the same conditions...

    Cheers,

    Lou

Didnt have a 2.4 but the 2.2 seems quiet. only 3k kms on it now so its still tight I suppose. Most of the noise I hear is from the intake. I shift at 2k rpm for the most part and drive at about 100-105 max. Best tank I got so far is 670km with the light just turning on. That was canberra - sydney-west pennant hills-bondi-goulburn. I filled up at goulburn and the light turned on just as I was pulling into the petrol station.

During then I would just keep the revs to 2k, didnt pass 100 unless I had to, kept the a/c off and just drove smoothly.

During another trip the monday after I only managed 619kms or thereabouts before the light turned on. That was canberra, sydney (then around sydney cbd during rush hour with some angry driving) and all the way back to canberra. So not too bad now I think. Should get better when the engine frees up I guess.

Have 40psi up front and 48 on the rears.

Thanks for the reply's everyone, I've ordered the new 110 today, so I'll have to get over it!

The 2.2 is certainly quieter and less rattly than the 2.4, it was just the intake noise under acceleration that bugged me. (I had to check the rev counter to make sure it was still running when idling at the lights!)

    Cheers,

    Tim
