300tdi exhaustmanifold - advice needed for fitting new turbo

    Hi all,

I've just had a nice shiny new turbo arrive from Turners. As you know they are integral with the centre section of the exhaust manifold.

Has anyone fitted a new oem turbo, and do you have any advice regarding pulling the manifold apart and then putting it back together again? Do you belt it with a hammer, or apply heat or put it in a vice and jump on it repeatedly? Do you use some sort of paste to seal the joins or just jam some old rag into the join as you smack it back together with the hammer?

I can't find any info on the exhaust manifold and how to pull apart and rebuild with new turbo section, so any advice appreciated!

Ive always knocked the elbows off with a hammer, it doesnt take much, never used a sealant or putty on reassembly,i leave the elbows loose so they can be lined up with the studs.

Thanks redrover, that is exactly what I wanted to know.

Amazes me that they dont leak around the joins if the elbows are loose enough to turn but maybe a bit of heat expansion after its been run for a bit sorts all that out...

They seem to just carbon up the gap.
