I flew out to Egypt the day the riots started a few years ago. We sat in Athens for a week deciding if we would risk it but decided to give it a miss. Would have loved to see it but the people seem a bit excitable. Tourism is one of their main sources of income too. They missed our dollars and will in the future too probably.

Actually, I thought the comments were more interesting. Like this one:

The reason people are prevented from climbing the pyramids is to protect them from wear and tear. This only encourages others to do the same, further endangering these sites. Want photos like these? Mount a camera on a remote controlled helicopter. Don't do what these guys did.

I have no plans to ever go there, I have no desire to be constantly hassled by tourist trappers and I think Morsi is nothing more than an ideological tyrant that has made the place even more unsafe.

The worry of the pyramids being damaged by thousands of feet trampling all over them is a very real one, given that they are constructed largely of limestone (a comparatively soft stone). However, the sun and the sand whipped up by the wind are going to do more damage than a couple of fools with a camera. Those pyramids have stood there for 4500 years or so, they'll be there a bit longer yet.

They used to be covered in pink stucco. Time has eroded all of that away except AFAIR a bit on the top of one of them.

Maybe they could now get some Greek contractors to redo them cheaply.
