Always nice to have new bolts (the three long ones that attach to the water pump housing)
    Steel P-gasket
    Good quality Sealant

Million dollar question - how far do you go? New water pump?

And then once the water pump is off, its less than 5 minutes to rattle off the timing cover and give the cam belt an eye ball?????

And I tend to replace the idler/tensioner bearings as a matter of course while the access is easy.

Anyways hope I haven opened a can!

    thanks

this is one of the local SA Land rover Expert spanner guys ( now no longer trading) kerosine and buffed sales with and over the top price tag.
i feal a bit guilty becouse the owner is a friend who sort of droped his toymotor ( rust ) and got a 130 after a couple of trips and drives with me.

every time i look at this beast some thing look suspect.

and yes i intend to look at every thing i can, though it hard on the owner, who purchesed the rig with recipts saying it had all just been done ( to justify the high price)

my opinion on a new to me 300 is:
-Yank the bloody timing cover! check/change the belt.
-Change hoses, belts and idle tension bearings
-Then pull the rocker cover, check the lash caps and the spacings
-Pull the PTO cover and check the main spline wear
-Adjust the IP lift to JC majic setting
-maybe fiddle with the boost (I like my Dawes valve simple to adjust wastegating)
-Fit a low water alarm/ gauging and all new fluids...

Could all be done in a weekend - Then drive it!

Doesnt rule out shot big end bearings or head gasket issues, but with water level and good gauges you can monitor those ones...

Fairly easy job... Should take approx 2hrs.

Make sure you've got the 3x longer bolts & newer gasket. Drain the coolant into a bucket before hand and get in there.

As previously mentioned, while you're in there, there are a number of other jobs you can do and one that often gets overlooked is cleaning out the intercooler.
