Free 2nd and 3rd Tag for RMS E-Toll - NSW

From 1 June a 'no tag fee', also known as a vehicle matching fee, of 55 cents will be introduced when people travel on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Tunnel without a valid tag to cover costs of matching a photo of your number plates to your account.

To get you ready for the change, we will waive the $40 deposit fee on a second and third tag to give you one less thing to worry about when travelling in a different vehicle.

Money gouging everywhere - living out of NSW I just move the tag from vehicle to vehicle as required.

I deliberately don't carry the E-Tag in the Disco when i'm towing the trailer as it registers as a Truck if I do (class 4). Without the tag they take a photo and can see its clearly not a truck so i just pay normal class 2 vehicle fee's.
From June though it looks like I will have to pay 55 cents so they don't charge me the class 4 fee

The problem is I have a rooftop tent and a trailer so the sensors pick it up as a class 4.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Thanks for the information.

That is why you are being charge as class 4 instead of class 2.

This will happen everytime you go through, I'm not sure if you can but you if possible try adjusting it so its 2.0m or lower.

Have you spoken to your etag provided and requested adjustment?

    Kind regards,

    RMS E-Toll systems

They had to match their own Easy Toll system where you do not pay a deposit on the tag - only a small ($1.25/month - reducing for more than one tag) fee. Payment options are much more flexible, you can even just drop in at an RMS office and top-up your account over the counter with real money.
You can also get a truck tag if you hire trucks occasionally and it comes off the same account.

Infrequent users have had this great system since "electronic tolling only" was introduced on the Harbour Bridge some years ago.

See the comparison of both systems here:

M5 to become cashless on 1 July 2013

In their press release referred to in post #1 they rather cunningly failed to also mention that the M5 toll booths will no longer accept cash from 1 July 2013:

    Welcome to Sydney Motorways

And don't forget this little catch:

If you have not paid a toll when using a hire car, a Toll Notice will be sent to the hire car company. Hire car companies charge over $30.00 simply to redirect each Toll Notice. This is in addition to the tolls and administrative charges incurred by you, so if you drive a hire car in Sydney, make sure you have an arrangement to pay tolls. (Welcome to Sydney Motorways)

At least the RMS don't charge an "inactive account keeping fee".

And here's one of the other hard-to-find facts:
Class 2 - Vehicle under 2.8 metres high with no more than two axles. Or vehicle under 2.8 Metres high with no more than two axles, towing trailer under 2 Metres high with only one axle.
Class 4 - Vehicle exceeding dimensions for Class 2

The question is: By what rationale are you charged the so-called "truck" rate as Mark mentions above for a car towing an empty tandem trailer when a VERY LARGE, over 4 Metres HIGH, multi wheeled HEAVY truck only pays the same amount, either as a flat toll or distance based amount. There are not too many cars anywhere near 2.8 Metres high but there are a lot of trucks that are charged Class 2 rates but described as "trucks". There is no differentiation between private and business use.

One of the only places you will find this is here:
    http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/publicatio...s/45070923.pdf

    While it is requested that:

"You need to register the Licence Plate Number of the vehicle being towed. Your account will automatically be charged the appropriate toll."

    (Source: Compare products)

I was told that did not matter as it seems to be a commonly held belief with RMS staff that if you have a tag, it beeps and there are funds in the account they don't give a hoot what vehicle the tag is in and/or towing unless you start a dispute. (Unconfirmed on any website)

BTW the RMS counter person at Erina told me that the RMS MAY take 3 lots of minimum amounts from my account or they may not.

Seeing I have a low use account I have a minimum or $20 so X3 would be $60.
I haven't had a quarterly statement since I got my extra 2 tags so I will await with interest.

    Smile RMS Update

This just arrived from Roads and Maritime services:

"Please be advised that from 1 June 2013 we are moving into line with other toll road operators in NSW and will pass on two types of toll road operator fees to you if your E-Toll Tag fails to be detected when using a toll road. The fees* are the No Tag Fee and the Toll Notice Transfer Fee.

No Tag Fee and Toll Notice Transfer Fee

    Road
    Sydney Harbour Bridge & Tunnel $0.55 $1.10

    Westlink M7 $0.75 $1.90

    Hills M2 $0.55 $1.10

    Lane Cove Tunnel $0.55 $1.10

    Military Road E-Ramp $0.55 $1.10

    Eastern Distributor $0.55 $1.10

    M5 South West Motorway $0.45 $1.10

    * Fees are accurate as of 1 December 2012. Toll road operators may vary their fees at any time. Fees are inclusive of GST.

What is a No Tag Fee?

IMPORTANT NOTE: The No Tag Fee does not apply to motorcyclists.

A No Tag Fee, (also known as a Vehicle Matching Fee) applies:

•if you travel on a toll road without an E-Toll tag

•if your tag is incorrectly fitted (and fails to function)

•and (in all cases) a Toll Notice is yet to be issued.

Your vehicle Licence Plate Number must also be registered on your E-Toll account.

This fee will be referred to on your statement as ‘VIDEO PROCESSING FEE’ and will be identified as follows :

    Summary use of toll facilities

    Tag No Reference Total $
    Video PROCESSING FEE 0.55

    Number Plate Identified
    Vehicle Registration Number: ABC123

    11/11/2012 10:59:51 SHB-002 06 3.00
    11/11/2012 10:59:51 VID FEE 01 0.55

What is a Toll Notice Transfer Fee?
A Toll Notice Transfer Fee applies:

•if you receive a toll notice from a toll road operator for a vehicle whose Licence Plate Number was not listed on an E-Toll account at the time of travel and

•you subsequently elect to pay the Toll Notice Administration Fee using an E-Toll account.

This fee will be referred to on your statement as ‘TOLL NOTICE FEE’ and will be identified as follows:

    Summary use of toll facilities

    Tag No Reference Total $
    TOLL NOTICE FEE 1.10

    Number Plate Identified
    Vehicle Registration Number: ABC123

    11/11/2012 10:59:51 SHB-002 06 3.00
    11/11/2012 10:59:51 TN FEE 01 1.10

How can I avoid or minimise these fees?

•Make sure your tag is in your vehicle, is fitted correctly and functioning.
You can find instructions on how to do this at Toll road fees .

If you need additional tags call us on 13 18 65 or visit your nearest Motor Registry. To help our customers, we are now waiving the $40 refundable deposit for 2nd and 3rd tags.

Please note: If you already have a 2nd or 3rd tag on your account, we will credit your account with the $40 deposit for each of these tags before 1 June 2013.

•Make sure your current Licence Plate numbers are registered to your E-Toll account.
You can update your registered Licence Plate Numbers by logging in to your myE-Toll account or by calling 13 18 65.

•Make sure your tag is working.
If you don’t hear a sound from your tag when you pass through a toll point, your tag may be incorrectly installed or may not be working. If you believe your tag is not working and you have been charged a ‘No Tag Fee’ or ‘Toll Notice Transfer Fee’ please call 13 18 65 or take your tag to your nearest motor registry. Please visit RTA redirect for more information on how to install your tag and ensure it is working properly.

    What else has changed?

Additionally from 1 June 2013 there will be changes to our Terms and Conditions for all E-Toll customers. We have updated our Terms and Conditions to reflect changes in Australian consumer law, removed redundant and duplicated wording and updated our products.

Additionally, our Privacy Consent statement now states that we may contact you by email or SMS with regard to our products and services. If you would like to review the changes in detail you can do so by:

    •Visiting terms

•Calling us on 13 18 65 to request a copy of the Terms and Conditions.

If you would like to talk to us about the changes to your E-Toll account, please call us on 13 18 65 and speak with one of our friendly staff.

    Thank you for choosing E-Toll.
    Yours sincerely
    Craig Orth

Note that you will be credited if you have paid the deposit on additional tags
