    Shutting-off the EGR in Defender TD4 Puma versus Replacing

    Over the past week my ears have pricked to an unfamiliar chatter when driving my 2008 Defender. Upon hunting for the source of the sound, I've narrowed it down to the EGR. Trawling through Google, other forums and threads such as this seem to concur.

    Not being a mechanic by any stretch, I had the gentlemen at Graeme Cooper take a look and confirm that the chatter is the EGR wanting to cycle back.

    A couple of Q's I'm hoping someone here can put A's next to:

    1. Has anyone experienced this same problem with the Puma? (If so, how did you resolve it?)

    2. Has anyone shut off the EGR in a Puma and what was the methodology (blanking, ECU or both) and the impact.

    3. Any thoughts on replacing (and where you can get the EGR direct) versus shutting it off?

    Tune your vehicle have the EGR closed when rewritten.

    EGR easy shut off

    After going through my third EGR , I decided to not replace and just disconnected the wiring from the valve itself. Car runs like a dream now and has better performance and economy. I've done 20,000kms with it disconnected and no issues. Only thing you need to be comfortable with is that the engine light will come on and stay on. I figure if the engine has a major problem Ill really know about it when it stops.

    Ill get a BAS upgrade at some point but this is a decent easy fix at this point

    my replaced under warranty EGR valve No2 has only made it 8 months and it's on the way out. As others have said, a remap is the only way to disable it without a dash light coming on.

    1. I resolved it initially by unplugging the EGR after it finished a self clean cycle. The MIL was on permanently and a couple of tested DTC's were recorded in the EMS

    2. I have an Alive remap on mine with the EGR closed. A point to note however when closing off the EGR on the 2.4 is that the engine combustion temp will be that bit higher than with the EGR operating as it should as the recycled gases allow for a cooler burn. The CHT would run at 91-100 degrees Celsius if the Puma was pushed hard when towing etc. I recently upgraded to a large intercooler and the CHT now runs at 85-90 C when towing etc. As an experiment I reinstalled the OEM fuel map with working EGR and found the CHT temp to be between 82-85 C whilst hammering the Puma. This is just my experience of the EGR closed by remap and the other mods I have may help keep the CHT at a lower level than having a remap with a standard Puma.

    3. If you replace it now chances are you will be facing the same issues in a couple of years time. There are semi blanking options to restrict the gas flow into the inlet manifold but the EGR still operates as normal. The only way to totally bypass the EGR not operating is to have the EGR operating map disabled within the fuelling file. This can be done with a remap but you can still have the original OEM fuel file with the EGR closed function or a new more powerful map again with the EGR closed.

    I did a write up last year on another forum about different remap files and one of them shows the live data from an Alive Tuning OEM fuelling file with the EGR closed remap file which Gary did for me so I could test the differences in the live data between this and the new remap files with added ooomph:
