    101 Tie Rods

    Has anyone rebuilt the long passenger side steering tie rod on a 101 lately.

    I have mine pulled apart at the moment and it looks as if the ball lower cup is actually cast into the tie rod casing though I haven't tried bashing it out at this stage. The rebuild kit has the ball lower cup as a push in part but before I get the "special bash" tool out I wanted to check wth someone who may have done this recently.

    Hmm Ok - I guess there are not enough 101 people on here.

    What about series rebuildable tie rods (do they exist - yes I know these are easier to just replace - not the case with the 101) - does the bottom ball cup easily come out?

    I have a spare or two. I can't get to them at the moment.
    I don't have time to pull one off either.

    These are the long tie rods that you connect the the steering damper to and if you had to buy them are hellishly expensive - I had heard in the order of 200 pounds. The rebuild kits are $70. The others are just like series tie rods just bigger and you generally just replace them as they are generally not rebuildable.

    But problem solved - when looking at the inside of the tie rod it looked as if the lower ball cup was integral to the body of the tie rod however when I hit it with the oxy (what would you do without it) the cup went bright red indicating it was not part of the housing and the join line appeared - a little more heat and a bash or two with a chisel on the join line got the cup moving and out.

    The housing has now all be cleaned out and greased with the new cup in the freezer to get it down to -20 to shrink it down a bit for installation.

    Oh I am putting grease nipples in to grease them but I really cannot see how the grease will get to the places that count. However removing the grease nipple and giving a squirt of oil in there from time to time might help.

    Mick - what is the timeline for getting one of your 101s on the road. I thought the old outback bus was not far from being a roadworthy runner when you got it.

    been away this weekend so I could not throw in my 2 bobs worth.
    All I know is two rods ends are rebuildable and the design of all the rod ends is they are spring loaded in a way that tends to make them self adjusting for wear.
    I fitted the grease nipples to the middle of the end plate of my rods ends.
    This has two effects
    1/ it increases the spring pressure and therefore self adjusting effects and will not allow the rod end to move vertically when some idiot does a rego inspection and doesnt understand how the rod end works.
    2/ I found with time/.use and regular greasing the grease will work its way pass the ball and cup and lubricate them.
    Fitting the grease nipples made for slightly lighter steering on my 101.
    I fitted new rubber boots thoughout readly advailible from most auto stores

    Don't want to bore you with details but one of the 101's is in getting roadworthied.
    They're being a little slow which suits me.
    The plan is to get this one on historic registration. I'm hoping it will be sorted within the next couple of months.
    I'm a patient fellow who savours the journey.

    Thats great Mick - leaving it as a bus or putting the original sides back on and a canvas top?

    Like I said. All sorts of things have been happening.
    Original sides and canvas top.

    Must say, I might be able to devote more time to the 101's soon. I could be having a lot of free time on my hands.
