Axle flanges

I am thinking about getting some HD axle flanges.Do I need to get HD axles as well. I have owned this 130 (96 300tdi ) for about 12 months. I have had no problems but like to up grade things as funds allow me. Thanks Joel.

It really depends why you want to upgrade the flanges. Do you want a locker, bigger tyres and stronger axles down the track or will you keep your vehicle relatively standard? What are you planning to do with your vehicle - touring, hard core off off roading or just some dirt tracks and beach driving every now and then.

It really depends and this is the hardest part of modifying a Defender I think. There's a lot you can do but you need to know why you're doing those things.

I have a 110 v8 county with a fair amount of mods. One thing that was not a priority was the axle flanges.
If they are not worn, why replace them? They are strong enough stock, and for my way of thinking why use what I guess is a hard faced flange to wear out your axles'save you money, and replace them ASAP but only then when they do have free play

They do have an advantage in that the rubber caps don't get knocked off in scrub, but I've found that bead of silicon helps with this.

Flanges and axles usually get done at the same time. No point introducing a harder flange if it is only going to wear your axle splines. When, if you do change your axles the flanges will only be a small part of the overall costs.

I would if I were you. I did on my front with standard axles. My standard rear axles and flanges lasted less than 20,000Kms before wear and slop was evident. They'll cost you about $70 - $100 and you won't have to worry about those lousy, plasticky, rubbery caps splitting and letting water into your wheel bearings. Then when you get the dough do the axles.
