    piston slap

Well, no defender day for me!After getting new head gasket ect after christmas, the deep knocking in my td5 was getting louder.Thought it might have been a big end but sounded like the piston slap i had in my first rangie,a 4.4 ltr.Had it checked out and piston slap it is..Was told cheaper to get second hand motor than fix it.Old motor has 265 kays on it.Mechanic has found one with new head thats only done 140 kays.Oh well, its only money! There will be a short motor with recon head for sale soon.Goes great but has a bit of a noise.Have just serviced the thing too!

Curious to know why this happened again to you mate.

Driving hard when engine is not warmed up?
    Too long between oil changes?
    Running on biodiesel?

Noise was there before head gasket failed, but was only just noticable.Has just been getting louder.Oil drop every 10 thou.It is chipped and goes hard when required, but i normally drive it steady.I dont think previous owner[young bloke] was so gentle though.Did get hot when head gasket went, but not enough to warp head.

    Hi Rangie,

Have you done any mods to the airbox?

I have this sound too, most pronounced on first start. A bit like a dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk-dunk noise?

I too thought big end, piston slap but everything runs great. Recently put my hand to the air inlet and the noise goes, horrible noise it is too.

I have removed the plastic cyclone and pipe from the box and have a pipercross air filter fitted.

I need to have another good listen this weekend but confident now it is nothing serious.

    Sure.

Small world! Off to Botswana in August, travelling from Windhoek to Etosha along the Caprivi to Kasane then Ihaha, Linyanti, Savuti and Khwai community camp back to Windhoek.

Definitely some sound pulses in the airbox on mine, I removed the pipe just before the MAF from the airbox and the noise dissapears.

Did the OP get any conclusion?

Need to do the old long screw driver to the ear trick Stethoscope would be better.

You can then check the height of the knock/tap in the engine. Piston slap, little ends, cam lifters etc. ??????
