    Volkswagen Beetle effect

    Hi guys

    Was contemplating a world without Defenders post 2015 with Land Rover instead releasing their version of that peice of $&@# joke car the Toyota FJ.
    Something struck me, VW Beetles were produced in Mexico for years after production stopped in Europe. Might there be a chance that Defenders continue to be made in South Africa (I think the only place they're made outside of Solihull) after they stop production in England ?!!

    Anyway, it might be pipe dream but its cheered me up no end!

    It looks like they will continue to be made in Sri Lanka at this stage. There is article about it in the UK Mag LR Owners Monthly which I download and read on the iPad.

    Unfortunately they closed the South African plant around the time BMW sold Land Rover and we have to assume all the tooling etc have been sold on by now.

    As much I I would be keen on the "classic" Defenders being built elsewhere in the world, Land Rover's recent marketing success and growth is based on them joining the 21st century with modern design principles. What ever the "Project Icon" vehicle is going to be called (Defender 2 maybe?), its pretty safe to say that they will not create marketing competition for the new vehicle by making "classic" Defenders available to distract from their sales.

    I honestly expect the last Defender off the production line to be the absolute last...

    Just my opinion, and it remains open for speculation...

    They should still make them wherever just for the non eu market.That way they could put bigger engines in them and not be restricted by eu rules and emission rules so much.Build quality would probably not change much.
