Record profits for Jaguar Land Rover

As dredged out of the ether by our very own Johnny 5 http://www.aulro.com/afvb/rss-news-f...-guardian.html

£1.7bn profit for 2012 is huge, and a long long way from the bad old days when designing the D1 and having to ferret through the parts bins of DAF vans and others to save a bob or two.

Tata really got themselves a good deal there, seeing as they only paid £1.5bn a couple of years ago, but then the JLR line up is probably the biggest and best it's ever been (though the rivet counters may disagree there )

Never thought the day would come when LR were talking about opening up assembly plants in other parts of the world, like the joint venture with Chery, and the possible Deefer nailing together line in Sri Lanka.

    Global economics...............

I gather that this is the price that Ford global had to pay to get rid of the unprofitable UK car division that was part of the fire sale. Otherwise, they would still own the LR component which had been turned around quite nicely.

    Cheers,

All they need to do now is replace that tired old relic from the British Leyland days with something that better reflects the demands of the 21C and the lineup will be impeccable.

It's amazing to think Tata have owned JLR for a few days shy of 5 years. It will very interesting to see where the next 5 years take the company.

I agree. I think the killing off of the Range Rover is well overdue too

I just wonder if bringing Tata's management to Broadmeadows and Geelong would not be a solution for our industry

I read that Tata's vehicle division isn't doing too well. Tata is a huge company so it won't collapse, but it's nice to see JLR making profits.

Reading in that article, it says that JLR now accounts for three quarters of Tata's automotive revenues. That to me says that if they hadn't bought JLR, then they could have been in trouble.

As you say though, Tata as a whole is huge and diverse, and unlikely to disappear any time soon.

What will be interesting is what jlr will do once the ford engine license expires since only the jag V8 is an in house design.
