Google Maps on Android

Has anybody tried this recently? I was away at the weekend and surprised at the number of tracks that it had on it (far exceeded the Hema and Mud Maps app). I was running it on the iPhone and Android and the Android version was much more detailed (had tracks the iPhone Google Maps app didn't)

I just wondered if anybody else had any experience of this (my single test of Pemberton is probably not that scientific/conclusive!)?

I have been surprised in the past how good it is for touring type tracks, but I'm not sure how it rates for completeness on 4wd only type tracks.

Another one to try is any of the OpenStreetMap based mapping products as they are free and you can add in whatever tracks you want to help out the rest of us...

Agreed - I'm sure it's not going to be great on the Canning Stock route but then Mud Maps that I currently used has never had any of the tracks I've been 4WD on in WA anyway!

What OpenStreetMap products have you had luck with? I've been mapping my routes with Memory Map but find it pretty awful on Android to use.

I have been recording my tracks / updating maps straight in to the website as it has the facility to upload tracks / traces.

On the navigation side I have been using Navmii's NavFree as my non-4wd tool, and it works well and gets full country map updates about every 2-3 months. I have not needed to use it for anything "serious" yet and I doubt NavFree will suffice as for 4wd it does not show some of the smaller tracks and also does not show things like locked gates either

On a related note I have been trailing Androzic to see if I can get away with not buying OziExplorer for Android, but Androzic still has a few bugs which make it unreliable for detailed travel. As an example I can get my scanned HEMA road maps in and working well, but my 1cm:2.5km Natmaps topos do not seem to play nicely.
