Question a question to a Telstra technician

I just have this email and would like to know if it is true:
    Quote:
.............Got a call last night from an individual identifying himself as an Telstra Service technician who was conducting a test on our Telephone lines.
He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9),zero ( 0), hash (#) and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local Jails/prisons.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. PLEASE pass this on to your friends.
If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass this on.

Why don't you give DSC Stephen Cooper a call and find out?

Oh, and Telstras take on it.

Because I do not like to waste the time of a police officer who will be glued to the phone

I was a Telstra tech for 30 years, due to increasing BS from above / too much paperwork in a alleged paperless world and infinite automated record keeping of every action (and inaction) you make, I left (plus I got a good redundancy package)

there is no need at all for any telstra person to call your number for any testing purposes at all, they don't even need to test your line unless you complain of a fault, and still they wont call you , unless its to say "Im on my way make sure your home" that said a robot does make routine tests on random lines, not for fault finding purposes but for line quality auditing, but the testing does not involve ringing your number.

The emails are signed with the name of Stephen Cooper, a detective senior constable at the St Kilda Road police complex, and give his phone number and email address there. Mr Cooper's telephone is now on voicemail, with a message advising people to delete the email and ignore the hoax.
