Green 110 & Army Trailer, Mt Isa, on here??

Hit the blacktop today , heading into Mt Isa, bit of a change to the bull dust & corrugations, and copped my first stone chip on the windscreen from a passing truck,

then an 80 series passed us and decided to unload his surfboard onto the road in front of us.

but the highlight of the day was this nicely rigged 110 towing Army Trailer,
who gave the normal one finger wave as you do to fellow campers, but then it dawned that I was a Defender and not one of the throng of Jap whitegoods and his raised finger morphed into a full on wave, good show.



must be on AULRO to have a good setup like that.

Could you tell me a bit about your dashcam - is there a thread? I've been thinking about getting one but wondering how much of a hassle it is to recording everything and then keep/retrieve the interesting bits.

Do you run yours all the time you are driving or must you remember to switch it on and off?

Is there a way to mark an event whilst driving so you can find a section of video easier when bringing it to PC?

I want one so that if I get a speeding ticket or something in the post a month after a road trip I can go back and check it out. I suppose it would take a lot of storage space to archive a full road trip... do you archive everything or overwrite only extracting interesting bits as and when they pop up?

There is probably a thread on Dashcams, its a Blackvue DR400G

it records constantly while the key is on.

it takes a 32gb micro SD card that records over itself about every 10 hours drive time, if you wanted to archive a months worth of driving my suggestion is to copy the SD to a 500gb backup disk after each 10 hrs driving


when something happens of note I scribble down the time on a notepad and retrieve the data from the card at the end of the day,

sometimes I even upload the clip to vimeo or youtube

That toymoter driver had his foot down - must have been spurred on by the sight of a land rover... lol... did he turn back for the board?

32Gb for 10 hour loop whenever driving sounds OK. Noting down the time and date on a notepad is simple and would work for me. Infringement notices have date and time so I suppose if you had an archive it would be simple to pull up... did yours come with supplied software for bringing up video by date/time ?

Backup everyday would be a hassle... a hook up to a USB 1TB storage drive would cover most trips.

Hmmm idea alert... I might look into making a HDD/rasberry-pi 'archiver' where you can insert any SD card and it will automatically make a copy to a USB HDD. This will be its sole purpose. Insert the card and LED lights let you know when its done. duplicate files ignored. option to format your SD card once backed up. Remove empty SD card to put back into camera.

Just thinking out loud...

Anyway cheers, I think I might get me one of these dash cams now.

the only sd slot on a raspberry-pi is used for holding linux system image, you will need a usb card reader for your cam sd. Actually you can build a recording system using the pi, I think there may be some open source software which can do high definition video compression on the pi.

I'm working on a raspberry-pi for monitoring my puma engine status in real time. Tho no idea when I can finish this home project.

True razzerpi would need a usb sd reader.... honestly tho i havent the time for all that. I found a dual hotswap nas drive with sd slot and one click backup button. I could use it for home network and then put it in the rover when travelling for sd card sweeps. 4tb raid mirror ought to do it.

Anyway taken this offtopic. If i ever get round to setting one up i will post a thread.

Mmm yes, a dash cam certainly does look like a good idea.

Especially given I have had 2 (albeit minor) accidents in 2 weeks with complete who had no idea about how to merge lanes, give way at a give way sign, common courtesy and/or how to drive. [/rant]

Another option is the wifi sd carfds (not sure if you can get bluetooth):

Pros: you can set them up so that another device pulls completed videos from the device automatically, freeing up space for "continuous" recording. I suspect the newer cards can push / pull to mobile phones so at least that means you may not need to lug a laptop.

Cons: The cards have low capacity, so as standalone recording options (e.g. long haul trips) they are not as useful.
