I have the black widow system in the rear of my 300Tdi:
It was fitted by the previous owner so I avoided the costs.
The space were the seats usually go (far left and right) have a top lid. Once stuff goes in there, it hardly comes out as I always have the fridge and boxes on the top. I would try having a front access rather than top down.
In future I might modify one of the side pockets and fit a water tank and a gas bottle.

DIY Rear storage.
Not much at the moment, but a job in progress
Mine are home made. They were full length through to the driver/ passenger seats for when I did a 3 monther to The Kimberly etc. I've shortened them to replace the rear seats. The fold down table was actually an extension I put on so I could sleep in the back! Note that the removable (so the door will close) support legs are slightly different lengths because of the step tread (hence the black tape on one). The drawers hold a lot more than one would think just looking at them. One drawback with my setup is the fact that the rear seats won't fold forward as there's not enough space for the bottom of the back rest to swivel rearwards but it's not a problem for us as we've never needed to drop the seats really. I've also got on board 3.5 metres of elec cable with a plug instead of a mounted plug, for the Engel, which, with the added length of the fridge lead, allows me to have the fridge out under a tarp or in the camper annex & easy to get to without lumping a battery around.
I've put an aluminium strip along the bottom from L to R which sits under the carpet sill strip of the rear door. Wifeys at work with the D1 but if you want dimensions just let me know. Cost around $40
