AFTER PUMA WARRANTY

Just wish to plan ahead as to what to spend if I buy a puma that has run out of warranty.
My wish is to investigate which upgrade to puma in various problematic areas. Such that the truck will be reliable better than just out of factory and I cost I should be facing.

Wish to get ideas and help from all experienced owner.

1. Engine with respect to throttle response and RPM flare? ... Aftermarket chip addon?

2. Clutch....... Heavyduty conversion and change to BMF for smoothless and quietness?

3. Modification of fuel filter with water separation

4. Realine the drive shaft and diff? Upgrade ?

5. Radiator change?

My hope is to spend some money to improve the reliability to match old defender , hopefully. Wonder if this money spent will be rewarded??

Issues by your numbers...

1/ - no issues.

2/ - original clutch , no issues

3/ - good idea, but never had an issues. (Done the Cape with all waer crossings)

4/ - just done the diff upgrade to the new Ashcroft HDP38 centre, but only as precaution. Original diff no issues at all.

5/ - no over heating issues. Been cross the Simo, well loaded with roof rack. Also regularly tow 2t off road van.

I get the impression that you are expecting some really expensive problems if you buy a puma.
First off I would say that JLR have sold a lot of new Pumas and by nature of the forums very few people would post how happy they are with theirs. It seems mostly its the problematic ones that get posted about. My point being I'm sure the odds are in your faviour that you should be ok (ish). Very few cars are Perfict (i was a dealer mechanic for 17 years)
Second, if you are that worried about puma reliability I would think you will have little confidence in the outback reliability of your new truck. And this is a big part of touring/ off roading in my opinion. So why wouldn't you consider buying an older version Td5 and with the money you save, and the excess budget from the new truck just build the altimate touring Defender? Surely it would meet all your needs and be cheaper. Plus give you the confidence to use the truck anywhere.

I must admit posts like this gave me the jitters when I bought my new Puma and I talked myself into expecting issues............all I can say is the more I drive my vehicle the better it gets(its as if its going through a running in period)and I don't really see why there should be issues. It is after all a new car bought in 2013 and probably one of millions built.

My thoughts are circuling around the toyota VDJ76R (70series)
The Jeep and the defender.
Defender is always my priority.
Toyota very expensive though seem to be reliable.
Jeep recent ones has always been troubled by the engine problems of it's new V-6, and seems the after service is not good. Even in America parts are scarce.
I think I shall vote for the Def!

Have a sniff around at some of the Toymoto forums......you might find their reliability and after sale service is not as strong as their reputation suggests.

Based on my experiences (09 110, 90k), all of the things you have listed would be nice-to-haves at most.

If I was buying another Puma I'd get it serviced by a LR specialist and tell LR to bash their warranty after 12 months and do whatever mods I wanted.

The things I would do would be front diff - needs a stronger centre - and the rear half shafts/flanges - which improve drive lash out of sight!

Anything else would be just cos I wanted to, with the possible exception of the rear diff which I believe will eventually fail (not dramatically) under a heavily loaded/heavy driven rig.

I'm doind the fuel filter mod next week, for the sake of being over prepared.

This forum is great, but it will make you paranoid!

What filter mod? If had a lot of rubbish in the fuel lately.

Thanks for the info , BTW what rear half shafts and flanges will you put in , and does this modification according to your experience correct most of the backlash? Also is it true that the 90 uses a different diff and has less problems??
