    Hello from Brisbane.

Not sure if you mean now or in the past.

My late Mum was the matron there for a number of years in the late 60s and early 70s and I used to do Xmas holiday work there with the stock when the students were away.

Back then Tocal (CB Alexander Agricultural College) had not been long open and they had 2 four wheel drives - a Series 2A Land Rover 4 cylinder and a Toyota Landcruiser - both long wheel base traybacks.

The early days of the college involved establishing a good bit of fencing and building infrastructure and the Land Rover suffered pretty badly from general use and abuse. In fact, I don't recall that it lasted all that long before they replaced it with a second Landcruiser. It suffered a good bit of panel damage from general paddock work and having the odd hay bale dropped on the roof.

Prejudices notwithstanding, the two Landcruisers were the first of the breed that I had ever driven and they actually went pretty well - especially pulling a load (e.g. 50 bales of lucerne hay) and at speed on the road once you got over the vagaries of the steering. The main limit was the three speed transmission in the early models because the college was set in fairly hilly country.

As for the Land Rover - no idea where it got to. It was generally regarded by the students and staff as being a bit of a "bucket" which probably explained why it was so badly treated.

Anyway, that was the only Land Rover that I was familiar with there - there may have been a Series 1 there in more recent times.

    Cheers,

I used to go there about once a week and had big talks with a lot of teachers and students, but I haven't seen or heard of any land rovers at Tocal at all. Doesn't mean one isn't there though, the area was one of the biggest users of land rovers due to the dealer being at Dungog.

Yes that' s true, an awful lot of Land Rovers in and around that area, in fact it is Murray R who asked me about it!, anyway the vehicle in question was in fact an 80" Series 1 with a canvas tilt and it was on the property 'Tocal' before the Ag college was built, sorry about my incorrect info in my first post.
Lou thanks for your offer you could ask you never know, anyway here Dennis

    Tocal

    Hello again.

If the 80" was on Tocal itself prior to the college opening it would (likely) have belonged to the two Miss Curtis's (CB Alexanders heirs) who lived in the main homestead for many years - or the estate perhaps. They did have a Rolls Royce at one time.

My family had a connection with the college for about 20 years and in my various times in and about there I don't recall seeing a Series 1 about the place anywhere.

The earlier responses are right in that the Hunter once had a lot of Land Rovers most coming from Modern Motors in Dungog, RH Taylor and Stockers (Leyland era) in Maitland and Simpson and Sever in Singleton. The 2A that I mentioned was at the college in the late 60s most likely came from the dealership in Maitland although it might have been from Dungog.

    Cheers,

Knowing Murray and his family up at Dungog, he should know every Land Rover in the Dungog Shire by engine number!
