4.6 Oil Filter

Anyone got a 4.0 or 4.6 V8 with the 4.0/4.6 oil filter that points down rather than the 3.5 setup where the oil filter sits up.

If so, with a Z89 oil filter does it clear the diff/axle housing or is a remote oil filter setup needed.

Yes i know the 3.5 oil pump and timing cover can go on but that is only for engines with a dizzy.

Planning on going distributor less with a 4.6 in a 101?

I suspect you will find it is either very close, or will contact when articulated far enough, the filter hangs in roughly the same position as the earlier engines. Should be possible to get a remote filter kit to suit though.

Worst case I'd stick the v belt 3.9 cover on (you can get a spacer to use it with the serp pulley) with the 101 filter head. It can't be beyond the wit of man to machine up a little plug for the dizzy hole and clamp it in?

Seeing the dissy is needed to drive the oil pump, a cut down dissy capped with a welch plug would be needed. Also the serpentine water pump runs backwards, a vee belt pump wouldn't work!

But a remote filter head would be dead easy to set up, use one on the oil cooler pipes and machine a suitable full flow cap to blank off the filter mount.

I do not believe it is possible with a 4.6 cam.

Kits are available to set up a remote oil filter but if I don't have to that would be better. A Z9 filter will probably hit the diff but might be OK with a Z89.

I have a 4.6 Crow Cam so no drive for dissys etc. I have the front cover off a 3.9 but I have opted to go dissy less and ordered gear to suit the 4.6 timing cover.

You make a very good point.

I have made something similar to what you describe using a 300 Tdi filter head as the remote mount, and made a blanking plate using the bottom of a used filter (3mm thick plate) an old bearing race (Salisbury hub I think) with a plate welded on top.
Worked well.

If a Z9 is too long check out the Z10 filter option.
Z10 is used as a replacement on some motors where a Z9 is too long.
I dont know if a Z10 is shorter than a Z89.......it should be.

Another small filter that will work instead of a Z9 is a Z418. This filter is used extensively across a wide range of Toyota commercials and is very compact while keeping the same seal diameter and an internal relief valve.
