Having trouble with my mechanical fuel pump and thinking of fitting and electric one. I have a 1966 shorty with all original engine etc, anyone know what type to fit, how they preform etc.

I checked the glass view bubble and the fuel was OK. I undid the fuel line at the carby and it was dry, when I hand prime the carby sound like the resevoir is empty and I get hardley any fuel comming out.
When I try and hand prime the fuel pump with the "out" fuel line disconnected no fuel comes out, hence I thing I have a problem with the fuel pump. I have just taken of the fuel pump and stripped it down looks fine to me.
When I rebuild it can you hand prime it on the bench and get fuel through to check it is working?.
Have you ever heard of the pawl that goes into the engine to make the pump work breaking?

it could be one of the one way valves are shot or the strainer is clogged.
yes the arm is easy to break especially if you install it in the wrong position.
there are a couple of versions of the pump that share the same casting but use a different arm, if the wrong arm is on it will break every time.
yes, you can hand prime it from both the priming lever and the normal mechanical lever to check its working.

Hi PPL
As I said stripped the pump down and thought everything was OK but after a closer look it seems that one of the lugs that hold the mechanical lever that goes into the engine has been missing some time in the past and as this has been rattling around its really damaged the casting. Given this I am going down the path of an electric pump. Now as I work at a laser cutters I can get a blank cut to cover the hole where the pump used to be. If I do this and not reinstall the old pump is anything going to fall loose in the engine where the pump arm used to go?
