Thread repair in Darwin??

Hi all!

Grrrrrrhn....

The darling daughter rang to say the steering on the disco was "noisy". Quick diagnosis of air, reinforced by claim that there was only 3-4 mm fluid in reservoir.

Easy job to top up and bleed with simple instructions over the phone? Not on your Nellie.

The steering box bleed screw on the D1 is now stripped. Unfortunately, and eminently predictably, not the screw that could be replaced quickly, easily and cheaply, but the thread in the ally top cover.

I think I have carefully explained to daughter and partner how to get the cover off.....

Does anyone know of a workshop in Darwin that might do a reasonable job of a single M10 x 1.0 helicoil or similar thread insert repair?

And then, after polishing the trusty crystal ball, and predicting the forgetting of turns and stuff, and just in case, any recommendations for the final adjustment and bleeding after re-assembly?

How capable are they.

I'm willing to help and I have a reasonable amount of tools.

CBC at Winnille sell recoil kits for about $50. They have most sizes in stock or I have a kit (tap, drill bit and installing tool) at home with plenty of coils left.

I had to do my cetrifical oil filter cover on the TD5 about 2 weeks ago.

Many thanks for the offer of assistance!

They got the cover off, and have posted it away for repair. I was a bit worried about the prospect of midwife and environmental scientist not quite getting it right.......

Hopefully they can get it back together next week, by using exactly the opposite instructions for dismantling it.

No worries mate,

I have a M6 kit sitting here on top of the fridge with 12 coils left.


I would have made the offer to do it for them but I know what LR stuff can be like. I rather just be the guide and let them do it. I was happy to supply the gear and advice though.

is it worth a try to turn the steering wheel lock to lock to bleed the steering?
