Unregistered dirt bike insurance - help needed

    HI all

I have recently purchased KTM dirt bikes for my two young sons. I have rung a couple of insurance companies and they are only offering insurance on the bikes (fire and theft) whilst the bikes are parked at home. This is because they are not registered.

Anybody have any experience here? What happens if they get stolen and/or damaged whilst riding?

    Thanks

Where are you going to ride them?

Perhaps you need to insure the kids for personal injury or have public liability cover for the private property where they are going to ride.

There is nowhere in NSW that you can ride an unregistered bike on public land, including National Parks, State forests or crown lands, I would assume its the same in QLD.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Same in Vic. You can not ride an unregistered bike anywhere but private property and even then it is wise to have a TAC85 permit.

There is a company, Just Dirt Bikes I think, that may insure your bike.

Same rule in Qld about no public land being available for riding of unregistered bikes. Forestry even requires road registered vehicles these days. I wouldn't imagine you'll have any luck getting insurance for them at all.

Yep you cannot insure an unregistered Bike, also if you injure yourself while riding the bike, your not covered for any injuries sustained or damage to the bike unless your on private property, then you can sue the owner of the private property for liability.

Then there's riding an unregistered uninsured bike unlicenced

2 PIA unregistered bike riders were caught on a track out in the hills behind where I live, got fined $900 each and one of the bikes was consficated (dangerous), Regards Frank.

I asked a mate in the know about this sort of thing and her view was: pity any poor bugger that gets hit by the kids and is seriously injured. They will have to sue the kids (and thereby sue you as they are minors subject to your responsibility) to cover the costs associated with their injury and rehabilitation. Similarly if the kids hit a Mercedes or other expensive vehicle, etc. You may be up for the cost. You will have to prove the other party was at fault. Not easy to do when you knowingly let the kids ride unlicensed, and on unregistered bikes. Is it worth the risk?

    Cheers
