Landrover help with p38 rangerover

Hey all, love the site and hoping for some help.
Was looking for some information or advise from people in the know.
I was originally looking to get a new defender 90 but keep hearing there not very good or reliable. But recently have been looking at p38 range rovers as a daily driver/off road worrior! If anyone can fill me in on anything to look out for or any information on how off road capable they are would be much appreciated. Also is the a lot of off road accessories available for them? I currently have a 2002 turbo diesel hilux and I'm looking for something more capable and a lot nicer to drive day to day.

I usually hear this from people who own another type of 4x4, usually of the Japenese type.

Defenders have their idiosyncrasies, like any other other vehicle. If you want a 90 take one for a test drive.

I have my 2010 110 Defender, so far problems have been an intercooler hose which I can't say how well Land Rover Assist helped to sort it out (over an easter weekend about 500-600 kms from home and 2 broken rear shocks (eyes broke off the body of the shock so bad batch???)

Other new/ near new cars Camry and Magna, both had head gaskets replaced under warranty. This is what warranty is for.

My old 85 V8 110, not many problems, those that have happened have usually been caused by a previous owners not looking after it properly.

Whatever you want take it for a test drive as a new car is a new car, and I don't think they are worse than anything else, and at the end of the day it is what you will like.

Have a read on the p38a section.
They are great off road, not many accessories, Rear lockers make a massive difference. Parts are relatively cheap and available. Maintenance is paramount, if you cant turn a spanner yourself stick with the hilux unless you are well off and dont mind big bills.

Did you fathers brother babysitter have a bad experience in '63?

Certainly a world of difference from any Hilux to a P38a.

A bit rich calling a 90 unreliable then compare it to one of the most unreliable landrover vehicles ever made, only the first Freelander's were worse .

I have a 2012 90 and love it. I would love to get a P38 for a family car. The 90 has had some recalls, but I don't ever recall wanting to drive a car everyday like I do with my 90.

If you are worried about the reliability of a Ford powered Defender then why in gods name are you thinking of a P38a?

I'm sure you will decide in due course which way to go! Both have their good and bad points, many will tell you the P38 is not the way to go - it all depends on what kind of off road warrior you want!

The 90's are a very capable little beast, quite good on fuel and will go anywhere straight out of the box.

The P38 is also very capable. My choice of off-road warrior. You need to keep in mind that the newest P38 you'll buy is already 11 years old. Accessories are becoming available now (finally) with a snorkel and lift kit the two main ones still not offered aftermarket.

If you decide to go with a P38 you will need to be confident in doing a bit of the tool swinging yourself as there are bits of the P38 that take longer to get to in order to replace and will cost you dearly if local joe the mechanic fixes them for you.

That said - I just did the Cape in my P38 and suffered no issues whatsoever. Old mate in the classic who travelled with me was not so lucky and I ended up towing him to help, then we replaced the motor.

Mine is purely tourer/fun machine and I'm certainly not looking back! Great bit of kit!
