Moreton Island

Hi All,

Going camping next week on Moreton Island. Going to be on the West, non-surf side.

Want to take some fishing gear but have never fished there before.

Any recommendations for tackle, rigging, bait, etc?

I cant give you any info on Moreton, but I would suspect it'd have to be pretty similar to Fraser wouldn't it?
when I go away anywhere, I usually pack a surf rod and a small rod/reel combo with a heap of lures, couple of small sinkers etc for Flaties/Bream/Whiting etc. Light gear can get you some big rewards.

Not sure...it's a much bigger expanse....more sand than mud.....and wrecks too. Can get some fairly hard currents too. I've got most of the standard default kit....but there may be some treasures and local tricks...says the optimistic fisherman....LOL!!!

Another option for you Kev is to get onto one of the fishing forums/website's. There's usually trip reports etc which might give you a better idea on what you can catch.
I'm like the biggest optimist going when it comes to fishing,, been known to do more drinking coffee and sleeping than fishing when out in the tinnie,,

Oh I'm not overly concerned if I don't catch anything either but it feels good if I do and the kids certainly find it more enjoyable and engaging if they get some action.

I was hoping somebody on this forum would have specific experience since Moreton is a popular 4WD, camping and fishing spot but I can have a look elsewhere too.

I have fished Moreton a few times. Usually using a 9' rod off the beach. Mainly caught flathead, but also a few other species. Flathead were usually caught on pilchards using a triple gang hook. Try and find some gutters and dropoffs.

Great thanks mate. I have plenty of that kit. Are there sandbanks suitable for Yabby pumping?

The old Yabby works well around Bribie Passage...so maybe!? :-)

I haven't been for a while, but sand worms were more plentiful than yabbies on the west coast beaches when I was there.
