rear axle seals

Hi all,

Just about to embark on replacing the seals in my rear axles ( Perentie 6x6 ex-military - so Defender 110 axles ) and I am wondering if I need anything special.

There seems to be a lot of reference to a seal replacing tool ( for the inner seal ) and was wondering if this is necessary or can be done without buying special tools ( I am not very wealthy )

So has anyone replaced the inner seals without resorting to purchasing special seal tools?

I use an old Maxi Drive drive flange to seat the seal, so far so good - this is for disc brakes.

By the inner seal are you referring to the one in the stub axle?If going for oil lubed hubs this seal can be removed but make sure you use double lipped seals
behind the wheel bearings...think it is RTC3511.Any problems get in touch with Top End Rover Specialists 0429648413..they are in Gunn, very good Army mechanic.

Hi Rowan, if by inner seals you mean the hub seals behind the inner wheel bearing then you can actually use the drive member (The drive flange where the axle is splined into, has a rubber cap over it) to knock them in with a soft hammer. Remove the rubber cap, circlip and axle and use the flange as a drift tool.

If it is the inner stub axle seal, (Small one) then just hook it out with a sharp implement, screwdriver etc, and again gently drift the new one in using a socket or similar. It goes in with the seal lip facing the inside of the axle tube, pay attention to how it is installed though but be mindful that someone may have installed it incorrectly...
