custom seats for RRS? head room not enough

    Hi folks

i have read through hundreds and hundreds of posts and searched all over the net but havnt been able to find the info as yet.

after taking a new jeep grand cherokee for a test drive and it conking out (twice) on that drive and then getting some, imo, double talk from the salesman and his manager (unrelated to the car breaking down but other questions on the day) i have gone off the jeep idea for the moment...

so i had a look at a RRS that was in car yard i was going past, sat in it and noticed my head just brushes the roof, (i am about 6'2'' or less), the disco's has more room but at the moment i am keen on the RRS, the model i sat in was 2.7l 2006 w/about 135000ks on it, mid $40k....

i am reasonably tall but there are many ppl my height and a good deal of people taller than myself, so i thought that this problem must come up regularly and perhaps there is a fix for it of some sort? e.g jeep wranglers have the same problem and some people make up a mounting bracket that allows the seat to sit down lower. i test drove a sahara lc200 the other day it has the same problem but many people comment and are aware of it, i am not sure what their fix is though.

i also went into the new LR car dealer on unley road (adelaide) to see if a late model RRS sport had the same problem but they didnt have any to sit in as they have sold out and are not getting any more in due to the new shape and model coming in. he did say that he has sat in the new (2014) model and it has more headroom and is about $115k so that seems like an option considering most of the RRS that are on carsales 2013 or even just a year or two old seem to be over a $100k and even $150K for autobiography models

anyway i am not sure i want the first in a series and not sure how off road capable it is, well i am sure its capable but not confident it could take smaller rims to fit better size off road tyres.

    appreciate any help

    cheers

You can fit 17" rims, so plenty of off-road tyre choices - and they're more than capable.

Did the RRS have a sun-roof fitted? They had less headroom than the std roof.

    Cheers,

I'm about 6'1" and have no dramas at all in my '06 RRS, only a problem after SWMBO has been driving! The seat adjusts down plenty far enough for me mine doesn't have a sunroof but I can't remember it being an issue when I was test driving others......
As for off-road? Never had a more capable off road vehicle. I run the stock 18s with a/t tyres (Bridgestone D697) and never had a drama.

I am 6'4" and tall from the waist up. Dad has an RRS with a sunroof and I have to lower the seat all the way and recline it a bit to get my head clear of the roof (still brushes a bit). My memory of driving an RRS with no sunroof is that I had enough headroom.

We have a Vogue with a sunroof and I have plenty of room in that. I also find the Vogue to be a much nicer place to be than a Sport (not that a Sport is bad by any means).

Let me know if you want to try sitting in a Vogue (I live not far from the Adelaide LR Dealer).

Be aware that Gordon's comment regarding 17" wheels applies to the 2006 you mentioned, not the new model nor since late 2009.

    thanks guys,

the 06 i sat in did have the sun roof and i had to tilt the seat back to fit in, i would probably just fit if it didnt have a sun roof, although it would be close quarters off road if i hit a bump i suppose..hehe, i remember nearly breaking my neck a few times in some old hilux's (they had space) whilst being thrown into the roof

thanks bigjon for the offer on the vogue, i did happen to sit in one a day or so after the sport and immediately noticed i had much more room, head room especially, as well as rear passenger leg room etc, generally it seems to have the space of the disco (or more) and nearly the bespoke looks of the RRS, does look more big and bulky though...i think i commented at the time to my daughter it reminds me of sitting in a fairlane but a fwd version, simular in size to park and drive around the city in too i guess.

i am not sure whether it might be better to try and get something a bit newer than a 06 though, the later models i see have 3.0l motors with more power and torque , not that i have found any complaints about the 2.7l

still so far it doesn't seem hopeful that a fix (e.g diff seat or changing mounts etc) is available for lowering the RRS seat, i dont think i could live with it brushing the top of head

    cheers

Did you put the seat down to its lowest setting and see how you fitted in?

There's more than an inch greater headroom if there's no sunroof - try one without.
