    Service info

As a budding mechanic wannabe (I prefer fixing things myself if I can), I was wondering what things are usually done during a service.

I'm driving a series 3 with a Holden 173 engine from a VB commodore. Any info would be usefull.

    service

A "book service" would be the way to go, however, I doubt you still have a book for this car and with the mods you probably need to do more anyway.
This is what I do very 5k's on the 300tdi disco with some extras for your car.
    1. oil and filter.
    2. check and or clean Finer Filter air filter. (Oil soaked foam).
    3. grease all grease points. (on disco, drivetrain only) on yours you should include steering joints as well.
    4. check fluid levels in both diffs, g/box and transfer case.
    5. for yours, check oil in steering box and steering transfer box. (when i had my series, I greased mine.)
    6. Visual checks.............
    7. spring hangers and bushes
    8. spring U bolts, damage and tightness.
    9. shocks, again, damage, leaks, bushes and bolt mounts.
    10. As mine is diesel, tuneups are not a problem. With yours you would need to look at dizzy:- point gap and dwell angle, replace condenser, dizzy ignition timing.
    11. check resistance on plug leads and look for carbon tracking inside dizzy cap.
    12. spark plug gap and servicable.
    13. carby idle mixture and idle speed.
    14. brake and clutch fluid levels, check for leaks at each wheel cylinder and clutch slave cylinder.

Thats about it, I am sure others will add what I have forgotten. Servicing is about PREVENTITIVE maintenance. Its what stops you from breraking down at the most inopportune moment. It could be said that this is overservicing but if you are stranded in the middle of nowhere because of not fixing a simple service item like replacing the condenser for around $6............................
Anyway, the joys of motoring are many and varied, so enjoy!!
