TD5 comes with an auto in the Disco but this would be extremly difficult to fit to the same engine in a Defender as the ECU control unit which also interacts with the auto box would have to be replaced. Trouble is the looms are different lengths etc and matching it all up would be a nightmare.

    Big project......

It is possible to fit an auto to a 300 TDi Defender though and there are a number of examples getting around.

    G'day,

John Davis Motorworks used to do them - so I guess now give Bruce Davis a ring in Sydney.

Hmm, I will give them a call, although I suspect they only do TDi conversions, not TD5 conversions. I'd be happy to be proved wrong.

    Thanks!

    tempestv8,

the boys down at Ritter Automotive on Highbury Rd, Burwood have just completed a really tidy ZF auto conversion on a Td5 Defender 110. It's a full mechanical set-up, no computer control at all!! Apparently, it goes really well!!

    Wow defute,

Thanks for the info. I suspect they just used the non electronic ZF gearbox from the older TDi or V8 on a Series I Disco or some such.

Must go and speak to them - since they are not all that far away from me. Any idea of pricing?

    Cheers,

    Lawrance

From memory, they used an early ZF 4 speed auto case and built into it all the Td5 Auto goodies to allow it mate upto the Td5 engine and withstand the increased working loads. They connected a mechanical kickdown cable from the Auto to the Electronic Throttle Pedal and specially constructed an Auto Fluid Cooler which is mounted behind the grille to keep the whole system cool.

From all accounts, it's a very good conversion. Not sure of cost though. Give Owen a call - (03) 9808 0266.
