Were you also changing the Cam belt? If not why change the oil pump as my understanding of the issue is that the oil pump housing failing is after a belt change and not before.

Well finaly sucumbed to the hipere the oil pump housing breaking off and letting the timing belt tensioner go , so changed it out for the new type of oil pump so more ifs or buts .
On inspecting the old punp there is no sign of any fatigue fracture or crack that i can see so cant realy confirm if it realy needed changing out or not .
Anyway piece of mind now .
Pump done
Belts tensioner and idlers Changed
Rotors and pads Changed .
Time for a beer.

In that case I think a smart move - as indicated I haven't heard of any pumps failing prior to belt change so I guess retensioning the new belt is the killer.
Not based on any evidence my guess is that when the OEM pump housing was new it was just strong enough to take the tension of the then new belt - over time the housing weakens but with use there is most likely a small loosening of tension of the belt that balances each other.
New belt back up to tension on the slightly weakened pump housing that was marginal originally and Bang.

I changed mine about 7.5K ago. My old housing showed no signs of cracking either.
Even the gears in the oil pump had barely any wear. Just the normal polishing around the end of the teeth. Otherwise all the machine marks still there after 190k. Not bad!
I degreased mine, polished it up and now it's sitting on display with the all the gears showing in my pool room, looks cool![]()
Did mine as a pre-emptive strike & my pump looked good also , IMHO i am still of the beliefe that these failures are the result of poor workmanship with the spanners at belt change time, but that is only an opinion . Still for the extra couple hundred bucks 4 a new pump it is worth the efort, at the very least you get a new oil pump + piece of mind .
