    ZF Auto Overhaul

    Ok guys/girls not sure if you have herd from another forum or not but my 4spd ZF auto has kicked it in and decided to go haywire.

    here is my main thread in a different forum, the first post will give you an idea of whats wrong.


    Basically what do you guys recond is my bets option and does anyone have a ZF they wanna flog off nice and cheap ? ? ?

    ewww... okay, now I have to make sure I get the gearbox checked before I buy, more and more and more things keep popping up to check... not to mention general concensus on that thread says that the viscous coupling isn't great, so gotta look at that too... damn too much, maybe i should just put a new engine in my S3.

    In my opinion, it would be very unlikely to be caused by the viscous coupling.

    There are really only a couple of possibilities. Either the transmission has not got enough fluid; is it leaking from any of the hoses to the cooler?. Also remember that when checking the fluid level in an auto box you should have the engine running at idle with the selector in N or P and it should have had time to heat up and pump the fluid throughout the transmission. If you check the level while the engine is not running and it is only on the full line then the transmission will be very low on fluid.

    The other possibility is that the friction material on the clutch packs has been destroyed. This could have been caused by contaminantes in the fluid, the worst being water; or could have been caused by prolonged driving with very low fluid level, in which case the fluid will be burned. You can tell if the fluid is burned by looking at it (instead of bright red it is dark red or brown) and by smelling it (instead of smelling sickly sweet, it smells burned). You can tell if the fluid has got water in it by looking at it (it will look pinkish and sort of milky).

    The ZF 4 speed box in Range Rovers is very strong, and as long as it is properly serviced you should not have problems with it.

    About the viscous coupling transfer I know heap of people speak against them but to date it is a very smooth transfer and also alot quieter than the LT230. I have not really notice any downfall with the viscous unit itself but in saying that I still think about changing to a LT230 alot :?

    And yes so far the problem seems to be in the clutch pack ? But is is wierd that it will take off from 1st (aslong as its selected on the gear box) and then you can go up the gears as you drive and it works but if you go below 20Kph you have to shift down into first again otherwise when you try accelerate all you will get is revs :?

    When you do get drive, is there still excessive slip, or does it feel as it should?

    Perhaps you have a stuck valve or a broken spring in the transmission valve body causing the problem. This may explain why it works when pulled down to 1st but not in drive. If so, it is well out of my area of competance.

    As far I know checking the fluid level is done COLD after stirring the gears and putting into neutral.

    When I get Drive I havnt noticed any more slip but who know maybe it cause i havnt really givin it much to find out.
