My new perentie... And a few questions!

G'day guys, see below a pic of my new perentie!

I love the thing... It's drives nicer than I thought. When I reviewed the log books a found it had a major service in January and there were receipts attached for $6500 worth of parts from land rover Australia. Win!

    Got a few questions...
Is there a manual available for them?
What do all the red lights on the dash mean... I know there's one for when the hand brake is engaged but that's all I know...
Where are the tools? Ie jack etc?
What does the little t handle under the drivers seat do?
Can it only be driven in 4wd? Can the diffs be locked/unlocked?
What have you guys found is the best way to silence some of the vibration. When mine is idling it's at the exact right frequency to rattle to roll bars something fierce!!

I know these are probably basic questions but any advice is greatly appreciated!
    Cheers

    Hi Wt,

New to land Rovers? I would suggest picking up one of Barefoot Dave's guides on the Perentie. I recently bought a copy and its a good reference.

The little "t" is to engage the PTO to drive the winch. Full time 4wd with a centre locking diff ( no axle lockers) some come with the army jack, if yours didn't get a good quality bottle jack. Check for a drive shaft between the gearbox and the winch - mine didn't have this and it's a pita to make one up.

The guys on this forum are very helpful.

    Congrats on the truck.

    Cheers,

    Matt

Oh and the idle speed can be adjusted to help with those vibrations. I have done this and recommend it.

Welcome to the AULRO forum and congrats on your purchase. What you have is possibly the best and most rugged/robust Landrover ever built (that's my opinion anyhow). To answer a few of your questions, are you after an operators manual or a parts/repair manual. Operators manuals are hardly needed for these vehicles, they really are start and go and stop when you are finished, that's really about it. They are permanent or constant 4WD with a vacuum lockable centre differential in the transfer case that locks both front and rear driveshafts. This is operated by the transfer box control knob on the dash centre that says (in - on road and out - cross country) and means just what it says. Don't put it in the cross country position when driving on bitumen roads or you will get "transmission wind up" and possibly damage the gearbox/transfer case gears.
The dash lights are the warning lamps for things like oil pressure, alternator, 4wd locked position, handbrake on, trailer attached, headlights, high beam etc. There is an illustration on the light which indicates what it is when illuminated.
Have a look through the tool bins on the sides or in the compartment under the passenger seat, the jack, wooden baseplate and wheel nut spanner should be in one of them if it has them. Note not all vehicles have the tools in them when they are sold at auction.
That T knob you mention is the Power take off engaging knob to operate the winch. There should be a metal placard on the fuse box cover in front of the main gearbox lever that tells you how to operate the winch, but basically it is knob in = disengaged, knob out = engaged. Have a read of the placard. Make sure the handle on the winch (drivers side) is in the vertical position before you engage the PTO T knob otherwise the winch will operate when you let the clutch out in gear (forward or reverse) and possibly damage itself.
The diffs themselves are not lockable just the drive to both axles. To simply explain, in on road position if you jack any 1 wheel up off the ground the vehicle won't go anywhere. Put it in cross country position and you will need to have a front and a rear wheel off the ground for it to not drive. For example, in off road position even if you have 1 front or rear wheel in the air and the other three on the ground, the vehicle will still drive away. They can be modified to genuine 4WD by adding diff locks or truetrac's (type of LSD) to the axles. A lot of us have done this, locker in the rear and truetrac in the front axle. They take a bit of stopping then
Best way to alleviate the vibration at idle is to adjust the idle speed up to around 800rpm. You can do this on the fuel pump on the drivers side pretty easy with a screwdriver and a 12mm spanner (for the locknut)
Quite a few of us on here have parts and repair manuals for these vehicles, just shoot a PM if you need any help with parts etc. Some really handy mods for these vehicle is to add power steering, a turbo and rear disc brakes. Have a look in the "search" section of this forum and you will find a lot of info about these. By the way, did I tell you they are the best offoad 4WD you will ever drive!!

Keep your eye on the upcoming trips section of the forum too, it'd be great to have a Perentie or three along on some local trips!

There is a blackout panel that covers them, this folds down & you can see the icons then..
