    R380 oil issues

2002 Xtreme. Did up my R380 about 8000km ago. Nothing major, just had a small whine in 5th gear that turned out to be play instead of preload on both main and layshaft bearings, probably from new. Put bearing/synchro/seal kit from Ashcroft and a new input shaft just for fun. New dual mass flywheel and clutch of course. Got fancy and put external cooler on and used Redline Superlignt Shockproof oil on advice from Redline. It was too easy to beat the synchros which meant oil too light so I mixed some Redline MTL with it and change was great. Progressively over 7000km the 3-4 gear change deteriorated to the stage where I could not go from 3rd to 4th without waiting between changes. It simply would not change sometimes without double clutching. This suggested oil all of a sudden too heavy. To prove the point I put half a litre of Moreys in. This actually improved it when it should have gone the other way. Anyway dropped out the Redline and replaced it with Syntrax with an immediate improvement and after a couple of days the gear changes were brilliant and have continued to be so for the last 1000km or so. Hate to blame the oil for the problem but what else

You should have Syntrans not Syntrax in the gearbox.

Shockproof was NOT the oil to use in an R380.
It use colloidal calcium and would possibly block galleries and the pump filter.
Redline even recommend not using it with pumps and inline filters!

    It's formulated for Diffs!

MTL or MT85 are Redlines oils most suitable for the R380. IMO Syntrans gives a better gearchange than MTL.

Yes. Straight MTL would be the better choice for a Redline product.
