Djevans,
Big question and answered with more questions
Some things to consider and answer (seriously)
1. What driving do you want to do? (how much off road vs Asphalt)
2. What sort of off road? (beach, mud, touring etc)
3. Are you mechanically minded? (why is 95 your lower limit)
4. Do you wear a suit to work (compromised image: Disco versus Defender versus Freelander versus Range Rover)
5. Why a Land Rover? (Heart rules Mind)
6. Will it be your only transport? (what does your partner prefer to drive)
7. How much research are you prepared to do? (Stay here and search elsewhere)
8. Do you like the smell of diesel or do you prefer the sweet roar of a V8 petrol?
There are many more questions but as you start the journey give us some answers to the questions above and others that are asked and you will find the destination. We are all happy to help you if you help us.

Welcome to General Chat djevans!!
Arhh the eternal question,,
V8 or the other one,,
By now surely every '95 diesel would have had its cam belts done and both would have had the gearbox problem fixed.
The V8 or "other' question is a personality thing,,
you either NEED a V8
or you like the practicality of the diesel.

Disco verses Defender verses everything else
Big differance between the disco and defender.
As one_iota said decied what type of driving you are going to be doing first.
Personally I drive mostly on the highway, but still love the mud and rocks.
Comfort was a big one for me.
Also the Defender is to cramped in the driving position for me personally.
Mostly you will be driven by personal choice no matter what everyone else has to say, but get as much info as you can so you are well armed when it comes time to buy.
Good luck.

All good advice. If you have a thorough look around you will find the answer to many of the questions you have, and the questions you didn't think you even had to ask.
Fore-warned is fore-armed and could save you a lot of money when it comes to negotiating prices.
And then once you have the beast, there are literally hundreds of people here to help with any questions you have along the way.
Enjoy.
