    Advice on S1 Purchase

    Hi All,


    I've just started doing some research on purchasing a series 1 and thought I would start in the best place I know AULRO!


    I'm very keen on buying a complete and restored S1 with Australian history, something I can drive on weekends and spend my hard earned on keeping the vehicle in pristine condition and not having to restore the thing.


    Just a few things I would ideally like in my vehicle.


    - a early S1 80"
    - matching numbers if possible
    - as close to original as possible
    - complete vehicle
    - snowy vehicle or other interesting Aus history
    - professionally rebuilt and runs a treat!
    - a turn key vehicle, that only needs love, not major repairs or upkeep
    - soft top


    I'm prepared to pay the $ for the right vehicle, providing the vehicle ticks the right boxes and of course the awesome people on AULRO say I'm not mad to pay that for that!!!


    There are 2 vehicles for sale on carsales at the moment, can anyone comment? it seems one of the patrons on here may of owned 1 of them previously, I wont post them here because I know most of you will already keep a keen eye on the AU market for these vehicles.


    If anyone knows of a vehicle that's close to the above please PM me and please feel free to add to my dream list for what I should be looking for or pull it to shreds if you think.

    Those two are certainly nice looking vehicles. The price is more than I would be able to pay, It appears that the price on 80s is going up faster than other series vehicles.

    For me a lot of the fun is in the restoration so I would be looking for a complete original vehicle. If you can't or don't want to do the restoration yourself I think you could pay someone to restore to similar condition as the two advertised on carsales and be save a couple of dollars. It would not be much but at least you would have the fun of the restoration. I am pretty sure some of the experienced restorers take commission work.

    Thanks Slug! I would love to do a resto, but I just don't have time or the shed at the moment and If I purchased a vehicle the resto would cost me heaps as I just cant settle for second best. where as when I buy a car it is "as is" for me and any little thing wrong is just character!!

    Unless you have contacts with the Federal Treasurer you will find your dreams may not happen.
    some one has feed you a load, of improbable dreams.
    be prepared to face reality, it may not happen.
    I have a few series ones, none perfect, but I do have them.
    do not set your sights tooo high, because you will miss the target

    If he's in a position to buy one at those prices I say go for it, it's got nothing to do with living in a dream world..

    Thanks for your inspirational reply, I just hope your ''half empty" fuel tank doesn't run out...


    Considering I've just started looking and found 4 vehicles I would be more than happy to own, improbable is looking less probable!!

    Getting value for money

    Being able to spot value for money is the important thing here, as there are way too many 'Dulux' rebuilds around, so if you sight receipts and the before then after photographs supporting the claims of the seller that work has been done, you have a head start on getting the vehicle you wan't.

    I have been working steady on a 86" series one 'HECter', obtaining those items that have been lost, butchered, replaced with incorrect type, worn and damaged parts.
    I would never expect to recover the costs incurred and so far the bodywork hasn't been touched, that's where my time cost will be and hopefully hardly a receipt will be produced as the work is purely for my own interest.
    Have a look at Dinty's Thread for a top restoration effort. My 1955 86" rebuild. .

    Money spent on restoration is not lost, as I take the view that if you are enjoying the hobby it's well spent and I don't expect that it could be ever be recovered when the time comes to pass the vehicle on.

    To track down and score a trophy appeals to me, although in this instance it could be a true to type windscreen wiper motor and not the head of a tiger.

    LR D4, I have competition.
    The one you seek was sold a few months back. it was in the Adelaide hills area. Didn't appear to be on the market long. It was sold by the time I got over to see it.
    $20k was the asking price.
    For me, restoration is the thrill of the chase for that hard to get part. Also, what you want to restore it to should be considered. For example, many of the International Mk3's were converted to fire trucks. If I got one of those, I would keep it as a fire truck rather than taking it back to army "in service". I know a fellow who judges at concours events. He rates original paint with a few chips and blemishes higher than sparkling new paintwork.
