    Saftey laws

Just got a news letter from my local council.
    Covers buisness matters and news.

    Found the following.

A South Australian company was fined $45,500 for failing to maintain a safe system of work, after a 20 year old employee was struck in the face by part of the split rim when he changed a tyre on a 4WD vehicle. The South Australian sheep station property did not have a tyre safety cage.

Just thought I would put it up here.
Never used to hear about anything like this and now every 2nd report is about someone claiming for an acident they had that is someone elses fault.

Now I will admit there are some employees that need a good kick in the pants to make a safer work place, BUT this one happened on a sheep station.
What would the kid have done if a sheep butted him or he fell from the farm bike, would training wheels have to be added to prevent falls.

How far do people have to go?

Ok I shall now get off my soap box.
Had to vent somewhere, the dog walked away when I tried it with her :?
There are two types of people in this world, good and bad. The good sleep better, but the bad seem to enjoy the waking hours

An interesting topic BB and the subject matter is sad,

I'm not sure of the stats but I have a recollection that next to the mining industry the rural industry has the highest occurence of injuries and death.

Farms can be dangerous places hence the call for the use of crash helmets whilst riding farm bikes and the introduction of roll cages on tractors.

Farmers I admire for their broad skills, They literally have to do everything themselves and therefore are exposed to more OH&S risk than any other occupation: Chainsaws, angle grinders, heavy machinery, pesticides and so on.

Where can the line be drawn between reasonable and over regulated?

    Responsibility

There has to be a point in time when people take responsibilkity for their own actions. every second storyy at the moment is following the american trend of doing something stupid and blaming it on somebody else. If you fall over get up shut up and stop blaming others!!!! :!:

In Queensland, I guess the "safety law" would be the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995...???

I have a complete copy of all associated Acts and Regulations if anyone is interested.

The person that left the child in charge of split rim flat tyre that needs changing needs rooXXXXXtXXXXing. If this is the station manager then he should be put in jail.

    Hi Guys
This is one I can get right up on a big soapbox.
I was a farm worker for the previous 7 years for the same employer, working like a tractor as that is what is expected,if you dont like it they let you know where the front gate is.
I stuffed my back and my life working for these whinging farmers that expect the world to feel sorry for them just because they have a bad season or a fire or any other little problem. These are natural bussiness risks taken in order to make a killing when the season runs in their favour.
I stuffed my back lifting a strainer post into a hole,it was the last strainer post of the day,I dou the hole with the post hole digger on the tractor, drove over to the trailer, the boss put the chain around the strainer,I drove back to the hole with the tractor but got bogged 1 foot away from the hole with the strainer lifted ready to drop in the hole, the hole was quickly filling with water and collapsing,I was told to quickly get that post in the hole before its too late. The hydraulicks on the tractor were dodgy to say the least, and you should NEVER go under the bucket in the first place.I bearhugged the post and twisted with it and dropped it in the hole, feeling a hot burning in my back.
The next morning I told my employer that I had hurt my back but it wasnt too sore to work.He had me bang in 1km of steel posts as he wasnt about to do it whilst I did the sighting. We finished at lunch time as a storm hit, instead of letting me go home and rest he had me pulling a radiator out of a truck, which was another urgent job but he wasnt about to to as you dont need to bark when you have a dog.
My back ended up seizing up as I had torn muscles the day before and the un-supported vertabrae kept banging together whilst banging the posts in.
I had 18 months or so on workers comp, was evicted from my farm house, and had people videoing me everywhere as the boss ensured his insurance co I was faking the whole thing.
In the end I accepted a lowly $24000 payout as I was completely fed up with the bull**** from the insurance co and was ready to get the rifle out and start shooting the aresholes running around with the cameras.
They had this lovely heavilly edited 2 hour video of me shifting house because of the eviction, which was just after having 2 lots of epidural cortisone shots.I was still on full painkillers,600mg Tramadol,4xPanedine Forte and anti depressants at the time,No pain and blasted out of my brain on perscription drugs.
I could have fort the insuransce co in court,my lawyer wanted me to,and had a good case and stood to get$120 000 +,but it woul have gone on and on for years.
Im now working for the first time since july 2002 holding a stop and go sign, boring as but at least it is something I can do.
Sorry to ramble on but sh*t happens.
    Cheers
    Andrew
