    is it possible?
and is it a good or bad idea?

    cheers

Yes 300 tdi have had boost increased.

    Is it a good idea?

Boost alone may reduce your exhaust gas temperatures, unlikely to get much else unless you increase the fuel as well.

There are people who have wired shut the wastegate, I don't know what happens in the long run. I suspect that you may get a few pressure spikes and higher turbine speeds.

300 Tdis are not the best candidate for large increases in performance, your going to blow the head gasket if you increase the boost and fuel too much. Small increases you will get away with. As these motors have a mechanical fuel pump increases in fuel cannot be controlled as easily as electronically controlled injectors. Extra fuel for the 300 Tdi is going to increase the amount of smoke out the exhaust.

Unless you know what you are doing I would leave well enough alone.

    30ish psi worth.

usually only work it up to around 25 tho doesnt matter how Ive retweaked it I cant keep the EGT under 650 with more than that on without pushing up the plunger lift and I cant do that because the fuel I run is of exceptionally variable quality.

at 25psi with a watercooled turbo I can haul about 3/4 GVM and about 1.2t worth of trailer up the toowoomba range at over the legal speed limit and keep the EGT at around 625.

Dont mess with it till you have both EGT and boost gauges fitted.

I'll be looking further once i have the water to air intercooler plumbed in.

Stock turbo is only good for low 20's. Gt2056 wastegated is good for 32psi if you can keep the head down. But low end will only see about 20psi by 2000rpm.

    Further to Dougal's post

For clarification you can increase the boost above 20 psi, but with the stock turbo you will not gain any real benefit because the compressor will be too far away from it's useful efficiency map. I.e. it will generate a lot of heat in the charge air with little increase in air flow.

IMHO 18 to 20 is as much as they should be asked to produce.

Having said that, unless you need more air to burn extra fuel cleanly, there is no point in increasing boost pressure, it will only cost power and waste fuel. This is a result of the increased pressure on the exhaust manifold, required for the turbine.

Put another way, your goal should be the lowest boost pressure to make the power, without excessive egt's - don't try to keep egt too low either, but you need to avoid excessive egt.

From what I can find the 300tdi injection pump should have a 10mm plunger which should deliver ~125cc/1000 shots of diesel maximum. I've scaled these results from the cummins 4BT 12mm plunger which delivers ~180cc.

That's enough fuel for ~550Nm of torque, but it would take compound turbos to make a 300tdi burn that cleanly with safe EGT.

How much boost am I going to need? Will the head gasket hold?

I like the sound of all that torque but it would have the vehicle self destruct and producing smoke other than when running high boost levels. The R380 is meant to be 380 Nm, the engine would require a different head gasket and I am not sure it would be held down anyway.

WHat did the HS2.8 put out? That should be an indicator of what the head gasket can take!

    ~50psi. Not without major mods.

Diesels only smoke at high load and only when insufficient air and boost is fed into them.
Yes engine modifications place stress on everything in the drivetrain.

The HS28 put out about 360Nm. No problem at all to get that from a 300tdi. Fit a TD5 turbo, set boost to about 20psi and tune to safe EGT.

For the last few repairs I had the local Land Rover service outfit do, they told me that the 1994 disco was tired (365K) and needed a 'tickle up". For $300 they could get an additional few Kw out of it to help towing the 2t boat. Eventually I said ok. Best thing I have done since owning the thing.

I have a whole gear back. Meaning where I used to use 4th up long inclines on the highway I can now use 5th. Used to use 2nd without fail in some cornering situations and can now use 3rd. Use less fuel and compared to previous performance it is 'nipppy'. I regret not doing this straight after it came out of warranty.

I do not have all the details but it included injector replacement valve clearance/timing adjustment, turbo boost increase and some other work.

Only downside was a few weeks afterwards it all seemingly went backwards and I told myself "see, I knew this would happen". After a call to the service guys they diagnosed it over the phone to the first rubber elbow out of the turbo. The increased boost had blown the 19 year old fitting, put a split across the side closer to the fire wall. After a screwdriver job on two hose clamps and a $35 part it is nippy again and going strong this last 9 months.

So in answer to your question. Increased performance is about more than turbo boost. If you want the name of the guys who did the work send me a personal email. Not sure about the rules on this forum.
