Whatever format your camera saves photo's as.
    Could be *.RAW
    Nikon are *.NEF

    What format are they in?
If *.JPG, then no, you cannot convert them back to the raw image. Or so I understand.

    Yes .jpg

I'm thinking it has to be something you do at download time..... Hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction for the future

My Nikon saves in both NEF and JPG formats. I have configured the camera to do this.
    NEF is the native format.

If they are raw files they will be too big to email. I use this site for getting around this problem.

They are not to big to email you just have to email them one at a time its painful and time consuming....

Weeds if your camera is set up for jpegs just send them...most people that have DSLRs have the camera save to the native file which in Nikons case is NEF because it captures a lot more information at the time of photo which means more scope for manipulation later on in post process.....

and if if you don't manipulate you can still save them as jpegs anyway which is what I do with a lot of them.

I would personally email him and ask him for is postal address and just throw them all on a CD and post it, much easier.

i find uploading raw files painfully slow with my interent whether its for email or for file sharing or what ever..that's why I usually just reduce mine in size massively and flick them to photo bucket. Unless someone wants a specific photo then I will make the effort to send it but not if they want like 10/20 of them
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

Navigate your way through the menus and you will find an option to save in native format NEF or RAW, jpg or jpg and native. If you have selected to save to your storage card in jpg only you will never get the native format back.
