front wheel patter

A friend just bought a nice dark green metalic '98 manual TDI with mags.

He's telling me the front "patters" over bumps and stuff,,

will this be shockies or steering damper or :?:

Could be a number of things
Loose swivel bearings
Loose wheel bearings
Worn steering damper, tie rod ends, panhard bushes, radius arm bushes
Shock absorbers
Universal joint on the steering column

Hey Swifty, is your mate familiar with landys?
Is your mate braking whilst he's experiencing the "pattering"?
If so I'd say it's his ABS and it's doin just what it s'posed to.
