    County to Defender td5 130

    After 8 years of driving the county as a work truck with no issues or unreliability I came unstuck a few times late last year so decided to upgrade to a 130 trayback.
    Just found and bought a 2003 crewcab 130 with 74000km on it.
    After driving it home from Adelaide I had been concerned about a vibration at the top of the rev range in each gear change, I could really feel the gear stick vibrating and also in the clutch.
    Was convinced it was gearbox, clutch related or flywheel.
    After I had to roll start the other day (starter motor solenoid issue) the vibration went.
    My question is- has the jolt of the roll start somehow freed up the dual mass flywheel ?
    What else could it have been ?
    Apart from the extra noise of the diesel i'm impessed with how much smoother it seems compared the old V8 county and more power as well.

    I was thinking about a similar upgrade and test drove a similar 130. My 1st drive of a td5. I also noticed a vibration through the gear stick.

    My TD5 at about 4,000 rpm develops vibrations on vibrations. I always took it as the engine's suggestion to upshift. I merely accepted it as normal for the TD5. Having bought a Puma recently the vibration is a TD5 thing. The Puma is rather smooth still at the higher rpm (all things given).

    being a new 130 td5 owner I haven't noticed this vibration...

    will check next time I drive it tomorrow tho...

    I recall that many Puma 130 owners complained about vibrations, and it seemed as there wasn't a solution forthcoming from Land Rover. IIRC there are several threads specifically about the issue.

    I must say this was during the early Puma years and not much is said about it in recent years.

    not normal for a Td5, they should be smooth right thru to governor,
    putting reverse load on the DMF fixing the vibe does suggest that may be cause of issue.

    typically they are good for about 200,000km

    When I replaced my Gearbox at about 190 k the DMF almost about to fall to pieces, and I had no vibes or symptoms to suggest the DMF was worn, but once replace the car was so much quieter.

    I had a vibration engaging the clutch about 12 months ago. I thought it was the thrust bearing. I had the mechanic pull the gearbox to replace the thrust bearing and the dual mass flywheel was shredded. I saw it on the bench and I have no idea how it provided any drive.

    i paid $1200 with labour to fit a new clutch and flywheel ($800 for the clutch and flywheel).

    That all fixed the truck still vibrated at 4,000 rpm and above.

    John - i must be a lucky one. The Puma engine is significantly more refined than the TD5 at higher rpm. There is 340,000 kms between the 2 engines.
