    Gauges

Does anyone know the best place to take a tapping for a boost gauge, an oil press gauge and exhaust temp gauge. Also does anyone know who makes an exhaust pyrometer that will do the job and are the boost and oil press gauges best direct with tube or electrically operated??

    Thanks,

    Shifter.

    Welcome on board Shifter
would really need to know the type of engine you are refering to as there are different points to tap gauges in and also the are pros & cons to tube or electric (mostly dependent on age of vehicle)

    cheers

    Hi Shifter

What engine are we talking about?

VDO make all the gauges you're after, the same 52mm diameter as the existing Landrover gauges in a Defender. The boost gauge is mechanical and the others are electrically operated. The pick up point will be different depending on what engine you have.

For a 200tdi you will need to drill and tap the exhaust manifold to install the EGT pyrometer, best positioned before the turbo. For a 300tdi there is a blanking plate covering where an EGR valve in installed on some models. It is this plate which can be drilled and tapped for the pyrometer.

Boost pressure is best picked up by installing a T in the line from the turbo to the wastegate. This is the same for both engines.

    Hope that helps a little.

    Thanks guys,

Engine is a 300 TDI, 1997, no ECU or electronics - thats why I picked it!

Also thinking of the fuel pump tweak to adjust the ful rate and maybe the waste gate. It needs that little more get up and go, but what a fantastic car, only had it for about a month and should have bought one years ago.

    Thanks again.

    Gidday Shifter,
I installed a boost gauge on my 97 Defender. I used a VDO 30psi 52mm Dia gauge to replace the clock. I picked up the boost pressure from an existing outlet at the rear of the plenum chamber that has a brass plug, which will indicate to you the thread required for plastic hose olive,

    Hi Guys,

Saw my name mentioned in dispatches, so I thought I'd drop in. Thanks for the complimentary words too.

I'm always happy to talk about EGT matters or answer questions if I can. If you have any queries, please send me an email to ian@thermoguard.com.au and I'll try to help.

By the way, sold my first kit to a Nissan 3.0TD owner last week, so the word is slowly spreading.

    Bye for now,
