    second gear missing

so there I was driving along and occasionally second gear became a bit of an intermittent thing,
got to levuka for our club trip and found on a couple of tracks we couldn't get second at all, came home and pulled the top off the box, no visible problems, I did think we had a selector problem,
drained the gearbox and a lot of teeth came out with the oil!
    so what have I done?
box has this number 25503154 F stamped into it.

does anyone know what box this is and what may be my problem, other than big!
will pull the box out as time is available.

are parts available for these gearboxes?

my box (151019057) seems to refuse 2nd gear if you try to select it when going even just a tad too fast.

on occasions i have to find reverse then find 2nd when sitting at the lights as i simply can not get it to slot into second..

no teeth in my oil thank goodness

    otherwise no noises or issues...

thanks dave, and thanks for the manuals also,
yes this box was always difficult to change down to second and first was hard to get on a down change, but I am good at that now.
    more dismantling to come....

Hey Harry, when you do pull it down, let me know so I can watch a master at work ( then I might not have so much trepidation at having a go at Ralph's gearbox).

Parts should be available from FWD Motors at Yerongpilly, or MR Automotive, or anyone else that sells Series stuff.

    Hi Mick

I spoke to someone from FWD last week trying to find some hood clips for the body on Ralph and the bloke told me they sent it all to the scrap merchant and wont be doing much for the series vehicles anymore.

IIRC the F suffix box has the sealed throwout.

Internally anything suffix D and above are the strongest of all the series boxes (including the SIII).

It is worth rebuilding but make sure you get compatible parts as there are a number of ratio changes between the SII and suffix A through C SIIa boxes. The Suffix D and later all have the shouldered layshaft which makes them much more reliable than the early boxes with the circlip retaining 2nd Layshaft gear.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Bloody customers, I could run a really good business if they would all bugger off and leave me alone to work on Ralph!

ah, what a great design that sealed throwout bearing is, wouldn't find that on a jeep!
    I found second gear!
it is on the layshaft but the layshaft has a small set of teeth which went out the sump when I drained the gearbox oil,
    the layshaft is stuffed.
    now who has a spare?

when I get a chance I will find the part number and see if this thing is still available,
otherwise I will be looking for another box.
