Shipping a Landrover

While we were away over Christmas we met a Swiss couple who had a Dakar style MAN 4x4 truck . They have traveled the world for the last 5 years including South America , Africa and Europe. This got us thinking about doing the same in our 90. We just spent 6 weeks living out of the little Landy and have a very good system and it's quite comfy although better suited to remote locations than a caravan park due to lack of privacy for changing etc. I have seen Defenders from Australia that have traveled overland as far as Russia and the road of bones. Does anyone know how or who can get your vehicle from Darwin to Indonesia ?
I have been told that there are plenty of inter Island ferris from there on. We don't have any sticky threads on overseas traveling here in AULRO perhaps we could start something. I'm sure there is a good knowledge base in here to tap into. Perhaps the are other like minded Landy owners who would like to tour through Asia and over to a South Africa.

Good and up to date info on paperwork/visa border crossings, road conditions and shipping, mainly for motor bikes but has very up to date info there if you look especially about Road of bones (which now is a federal highway but the old summer road still "exists" to challenge you).

You need a copy of the "Vehicle Dependant Expedition Guide" by Tom Shepherd (Desert Winds Publications).

Shipping is simple enough, it's understanding paperwork, officaldom, carnets, etc... which is the fun bit!!! I've jumped through the hoops of shipping my 110 a few times (both RoRo & container), so feel free to fire questions at me.

Try "Cargo on line". You can get a quote for shipping in a few minutes. But as said, the red tape, from what I've read is always the problem.

We Shipped out car from Singapore to Darwin using Perkins. I am pretty sure they stop off in East Timor and of course travel both ways. The advice I got at the time from Indonesian friends was that it is possible to island hop all the way through Timor and Indonesia. There is also a shipping line from Sumatra to Malaysia (Malacca). I couldn't find anything into Singapore from Indonesia. We did not bother with a container and shipped the car on the deck.

I personally found shipping a lot of hassle so I would go direct to Singapore and it is all overland for as long as you like from there.

You should read up on Carnet de Passages and contact your state motoring body to understand costs. You also travel most places without comprehensive insurance so need to be comfortable with that.

If you want to go further than Asia then you also need to think about the costs for China. You need to have a guide in the car at all times (who turned out to be fantastic), you need to submit an itinerary, and have permits for each province, a local licence, and local car registration. We also crossed the border where foreigners were not allowed and that also required permission. I think all up it cost us $8000 for 28 days just to organise it and recent trouble in Xinjian has probably closed off the West anyway. But if all that does not put you off it was an amazing country to drive through and if you PM me I can send you some contacts.

The book we used that contains a lot of practical information is the adventure motorcycling handbook. Its bike specific but you will get what you need from it.

Finally getting your car back into Australia was a major PITA for us. Took over 6 weeks to get it off the dock in Darwin!

We drove from the UK to Australia, and one of the highlights was the Pamir Highway and the Wakhan valley in Tajikistan. If you can make it to that region you will love it.

Other than that the biggest hurdle you will have is a fear of the unknown. But once you hit the road you will realise it is not that much different to travel anywhere. Its an experience you will never forget thats for sure.
