    Never seen this before..swivel rubber boot

    anyone used these boots over the swivels before? i was searching for steering rods and saw this pic...will they fit on a series 1 disco? they worth it?

    I had a set on a RRC many years ago.
    AFAIR they were a PITA to fit . I think mine were split and you glued the joint together .
    They made the nuts for the axle flange almost impossible to get to, and AFAIR, I cut them off one side when I redid the swivel.
    IMHO , they are of little value in Australia as we do not have the rust and pitting problems of the UK, and our balls are usually well lubricated.

    Looks like it bolts onto the axle and then to your gasket plat at the back. I can see the benefit if your seals are bad or extra insurance, but not if you dont feel the need for them. If anything, would keep small rocks, water, mud and dirt away from the swivel hubs, at least preventing the possibility of all of the above breaking through a seal. That is depending how thick they are and how great of seal it is. Just my 2 cents.

    They seem to be popular in the UK and have been an option on Land Rovers since Series 1.

    The back in those days they were chamois leather, which needs to be kept moist to remain supple, In Australian conditions they dried out and cracked only serving to hold mud and dust up against the ball.

    No idea what more modern ones would be like. I would think that rubber ones would be vulnerable to sticks and rocks if you do some serious off highway work.

    They would be good in places where they salt the roads, not much point out here unless you spend a lot of time on Lake Ayre or driving along ocean beaches.

    You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
