Saturday morning quiz - name this broken part

    only clue - it's off a 300tdi.

Glad I caught it now....don't want to think of the damage this would cause if it let go completely. Obviously previous repair had been done by the evidence of a poor attempt at welding. Once bracket was removed from engine, the second tab feel off.

These 300Tdi defender A/C brackets broke quite often, they were poorly made in Australia for the A/C fitted here. Obviously not designed for a diesel engine fitment.

but yes that repair is a disaster

Correct!..and yes...very poor attempt at repair.

All good now...ground out old welds and new weld laid down...

Well I retrospectively failed the quiz.

I was thinking the shape was similar to a brake caliper/pad. Not that I can think of any bracket on the hub that looks like that!

Obviously I haven't encountered this fault yet, but if my AC compressor ever falls off, I will no doubt think of this thread.

Disco ones are different - they have a cast aluminium bracket.

Those 2 pipe bends have an unpleasant habit of cracking too. A fabricated support of some kind is a good bit of proactive maintenance.
