    Advice wanted

    Hi all,
I am new to this site and new to Land Rovers. Just need some advice, a friend is selling his old long wheelbase Land Rover. He has had it on his farm for a long time, so it is pretty rough but complete. It also has a hard top. What would it be worth? I know it's hard without seeing it. Where would I find the compliance plate and will it tell me the year and model on the compliance plate?
I tried unsuccessfully to upload some photos to this site. Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

As you say pinning a value is hard. How old? Does it run (well)? Is it straight? Still got a LR motor or is there a Holden engine in there? How much rust is in it? Chassis and firewall being the biggy. One thing I will say is that if it's full of rust it's probably better for spares. What are you planning to do with it? I know it sounds simple but take it from a guy currently doing a Series LWB if you plan on restoring it, the worse it is the more it's going to cost you to restore/rebuild it and you will need to consider that. Whatever you think a restoration/rebuild will cost - double it. Mine came off a farm as well, and the more it was pulled apart the more surprises I found.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to put you off, if you can get some pictures or tell us more that would be a big help if it is a good car, you will not regret your purchase ... and over time may end up with a fleet of Landys! if he/she's keen to see it go you may well end up with a solid bargain

You might find a plate inside in front of the gear lever. Also, you will find a chassis number stamped to the outside of the left rear spring hanger thing ... I wouldn't be surprised if it starts with '253'. Once you have that number some clever people here can tell you what year it is

    Thanks Cobber,
I will have a look for the VIN tomorrow and try to upload some photos. I've done a rego check and it's currently registered, which is a bonus.
