    Landrover ex radio van

Going to look at a ex army radio hardtop , noy sure of age but is near Ballarat and it has an isuzu engine and a 4 speed box.
What do I look for and what are the traps in a vehicle such as this. It is on ebay for $13 odd grand. Is this what they are worth with 178,000 Ks.
    Thanks for the replies.
    Lindsay.

    Giday,
    Sounds like it's a Perentie.
I moved your thread to the coil sprung area.
Landrover Defender 110 in Ballarat, VIC | eBay
I'm guessing it may be a Survey variant.
There is another post on here that would give you a guide on the price they got at auction. Bear in mind, those prices are without the 6% buyers premium and 10% GST applied.

Mick, thanks for that. I have looked though the posts. What I am looking for is what are the traps and faults to look for.
    Regards Lindsay.

Barefoot Dave on this Forum has published a very detailed buyers guide on the ex army Perenties. I think it is well worthwhile the money.
That one in Ballarat is selling for around what it would currently cost to buy at the auctions, as the most recent prices have been between 11.5k to 14.5 k all up. Ask him if he bought it at the Melb auction late last year, I recall prices were around 8-9 k plus 6% plus 10% plus transport,RWC & registration it would have him making a small margin. If you want a soft top without a winch, you should be easily able to pick one up next Melb auction for well under 10k all up. That way you have time to swot up..

Your question deserves a very detailed response, and it is a question often repeated on this forum & I suspect the regular contributors are getting immune to responding..

    G'Day Lindsay and welcome.
I only just found your questions.
As Deejay said, that price is fair for the vehicle unless they have done some serious damage since they bought it.
Look for corrosion in all the normal Landy spots:
    Firewall (it isn't galvanised)
    footwells
    windscreen surrounds
    door frames (all 3)
Check the interior bottom of the rear side vent assembly, it is also prone to rust. Not major/ structural but is an issue.

Check for chassis cracks around the rear suspension and middle cross member bottoms. I haven't seen any on a Survey but you never know.

Listen to the gearbox carefully when you drive it. They are a noisy beast but if it sounds tortured, pass!
The gearbox MUST run the engine oil or similar low viscosity oil. If they have used some super-thick, you-beaut stuff, it might be buggered.
The military vehicles had a taper-roller bearing conversion on a Transfer shaft and need thin oil. Ask them.

Check the winch works, if safe to do so.
The PTO driven winch has an over load cutout, a clutch disengages and sounds terrible, but is ok.

Also, As Deejay says, my book is great. Buy it!
    Thanks for the feedback Deejay.
    Cheers, BDave.

    Radio van

Thanks Dave, my friend bought it. I did go over with him to look at it and I let him make the decision. It looked and drove really good and has 5 near new michelin tyres. Bit more noise than my 2.2 defer though. Funny thing he got a permit to drive it home and as it got dark could not work out why the lights were dull , the blinkers didn't work nor would the horn. Then he found that the blackout switch was in the wrong position, then all ok.
    Thanks for your valuable info.
