Asia/Europe maps on Ipad or PC

I am looking at a trip through China and the 'Stans to (eventually) London in 2015 and planning well under way. For mapping systems so far the best option seems to be Memory-Map App. and download to it Google Maps, but I have no experience in this. Advice from anyone who has done such a thing will be much appreciated. Can use either Ipad (preferred) or Asus EEEPC with a re-built Solid State drive. Prefer the Ipad as it has the built in GPS, I wish to use the Maps for location but off-line

Open street map will be all you need for the Stans. If you can run this on the Ipad then great. We used a Garmin GPS60 handheld last year and it was faultless. I am currently using a navigator app which uses OSM maps but I wouldn't have liked it on our trip last year. The handheld Garmin was excellent.

I would recommend duplicating your mapping onto the netbook incase your ipad breaks or gets stolen. I would also seriously consider a small handheld unit over a tablet on the dash/windscreen outside of Australia. Not only will it get a hammering but it will really stand out to those less fortunate.

Excellent got all that. i actually have a Garmin GPS60. Did you use it to link to a PC/notebook/device that did not have an inbuilt GPS and if so how did you do that please ?
Given the cheapness of Tablets these days it is probably worth buying a GPS enabled one just for the trip and using it for maps only ? Keep the ipad out of sight ?
The SSD in the EEE PC is very robust and should be a good back-up, but the screen is much harder to view on the road.
