GarminTopo, Oztopo V6 or just use Shonky Maps

Few older threads kicking around, but nothing recent.

Thinking on wacking an SD card in my new Garmin Nuvi 2597(got sick of using my phone as a street GPS ) and after thoughts on whether Garmin Topo or Oztopo are worth the money, or just use Shonky maps.

I have an iPad with Mud Maps and Memory Map with the free map and 1:25000 Vicmap series.

But the iPad mounted on the dash annoys the wife. Thinking that I could just use the Nuvi mounted in the corner out of the way and refer to the iPad if needed.

I am a gadget man and can't help myself with toys.
All opinions taken on board, just don't tell my wife how much all this may cost.

I bought a garmin topo map of fleabay a while ago for my handheld gps.
Cant remember the price, but it showed everything.
Unfortunately I lost it last month and am wondering whether to update or just get another topo map....hmmm decisions.

I bought a topo v4 on eBay and it is a lot bigger than my v2 .
I have not had to use it seriously yet but looks very detailed.
Usual caveat that track names do not show until themap detail is quite large e.g 700 metres so. .can be frustrating.
Shonky maps are quite old and also do not show tracks until high magnification ,in this case the whole track not just the name.

I've tried allsorts, loading maps from ozie explorer onto the chinese e-bay 7" etc. but I think the easiest and best is probably = any sized garmin with an e-bay $15 toppo sd card and a paper map for detailed areas (high country etc.)

But that might be because I'm an idle basta**d
